Anyone wet shave with a Safety Razor? I'm looking for places in Des Moines where I can buy shaving soaps and blades besides Walgreens.

I wet shave and have been for 3-4 years now. I haven't found a store in the Des Moines area, but I haven't really looked around for one either. I check out razorandbrush.com for prices and reviews of products then order online when I need to. I have heard that the Farmer's Market up in Ames sells shave soap and I'm assuming there are some vendors at the Downtown Farmer's Market that sell soaps too.

so far I've bought most of my stuff at Amazon but I did get a Van Der Hagen soap, mug and brush set from Walgreens.

I go the internet route also. A cake of soap lasts FOREVER.

I buy about everything over the internet but you probably can pick up some Proraso locally, which is decent for the $.

If you want to spend more money, there is a Art of Shaving in Jordan Creek. Most of the stuff is way overpriced but their shaving soap is excellent.

Pretty sure there's a shaving store in one of the malls. I can't remember if it's Valley West or Jordan Creek, though.

Ahh, the best part about going to my barber back home. A good shave with my haircut. I know he buys all his stuff online as well. And he goes through a crap ton of it. I never really gave it much of a thought, and not to totally derail this thread, but I think this might be a good idea.

I'll be honest here. I was going to make a comment, "ah, look at all the cute little hipsters.". But after a little research, you guys are on to something. Kudos.

The store is: The Art of Shaving
I buy some of their products and I have found them to be very good. They are a little pricey but they also last a really long time.
If you do the math on buying their stuff and like me, get a couple uses out of a (10 cent) double edge blade, it doesn't seem so bad. The people who dismiss DE shaving seem to really focus on the cost of the soaps and brushes but don't take into account how much they spend on their mach 3 blades.

Quite the thread revival by myself but I thought the exact same thing until I gave it a try a few days ago, so far I'm really liking the results I am getting. With my Fusion Proglide Power I would NEVER go against the grain without the painful tugging and razor burn. Today is the first day I went against the grain and so far so good, using an EJ89 with derby blades and escali brush and proraso soap. (All amazon purchases - had a gift card to burn) Open to suggestions on better products!

I've used a de for about ten years now, takes a little work to perfect technique but eventually as good a shave as the fancy multiblades for much less$ and a little extra time.
