Aren't the Blimpee's in CR in connection with a Casey's? I think there's one over by Collins and another one on Edgewood Road that are. We had a pretty good sandwich there when visiting someone in hospital that requested we please bring a specific sandwich from Blimpee's because he was craving...

If I ever had a Jimmie John's sandwich it's been a long time ago and it didn't make any kind of lasting impression.

Used to work at a CPA firm in Hiawatha, Blimpie was a frequent stop there off the interstate.

I assume you are talking about the one inside the Casey's off Boyson. I used to go there so often, they all knew my name. I thought their subs were good. Odd story, I was there once and while one person was making my sub, the other was shredding the lettuce. It was shipped as a full head and they had to shred and bag it for the subs. He got distracted for a second and the blades caught a couple of his fingers. The manager was taking him to the ER as I was leaving. No word on whether they threw that batch of lettuce out.

I use a debit card almost exclusively, because of its convenience and not having to pay a fee to get cash out of an ATM when I am not near the bank or one of their machines. And it is nice to have a permanent record of where the money is going. But it is getting to the point where I may have to go back to cash if retailers and the card industry can't secure their systems.

As far as Jimmy John's, I only eaten there once and it is three blocks from my house. It was okay.

Yeah there is one on edgewood, actually I think there are a couple on edgewood. I'm pretty sure this is the only place where Blimpee still exists in Iowa. And yeah they aren't free standing, usually they are connected to gas stations, though I don't think they are connected to Caseys because they do their own sandwich thing.

We used to have one here too on the other side of town. I wonder if its still there. We also have a place called Firehouse Subs, but its overpriced and pretty average.

I've heard good things about firehouse subs, never tried one though.

I use to LOVE Jimmy John's. Ate at one back in May/June, had taken 3 bites out of my Vito and was getting ready to take another bite and stopped as I noticed a big fly stuck in the mayo on the bread. I just about threw up right there. I haven't been able to eat at JJ's since. I took the sandwich to the the manager, who was just a kid, and asked if I had been charged extra for the fly. He said in his Spicoli voice, "Woah, dude, I've never seen anything like that before, like ever."

That does suck, when you specifically order no flies and they throw a big fly right in there, poor quality control.

There are lots of sub shops out here in CR, for some reason Blimpe still exists out here.

They actually just opened a Blimpie in Ankeny fairly recently. It'd been years since I'd seen one anywhere. I'll put JJ's ahead of Subway and Blimpie but they all pretty much suck.

This is why I never use my debit card anywhere.

What do you have it for then? I ask because I've never understood the hoopla of debit over credit anyway.

Little "beware" story. Few years back my wife's wallet was stolen while we were out to eat. In the hour we were there, they got to a target and got about 1500 worth of stuff bought on various cards. One of which was my wife's atm/debit card from our local bank. As we were calling the various companies and trying to get stuff cancelled, I thought about the ATM but thought - they don't have the pin, it won't do them any good. But decided to call anyway. Sure enough - they had siphoned off about $600. Found out that you need the pin to run debit, but not to run credit. Both come out of your account straight away. Our bank stood by the no-fault agreement and replaced the funds within a few days - although it was a bit more complicated than the credit cards (police report mainly)

I just don't get the use of the damn things. Run it as a debit = pin. Run it as a credit = no pin. Money comes out either way?

Fortunately enough, our bank has the option to disable both transactions and now the card is pretty much just a dumb atm.

There is a free standing Blimpie's on Ankeny Blvd. There's a few of them in Des Moines and I can think of at least one or maybe even two in Davenport.

I have some fond memories that are in no way food related to the old Blimpie's in Campustown, the nostalgia gets me to stop in to the chain once every couple of months.

I always use my debit card as credit because my bank gives me probably 10X more interest for using it that way.

Yeah, I had to prove to the bank I or my wife didn't buy them.

"I've never once over-drafted my account in 31 years and suddenly I overdraft it by $800 to fly to Panama?"
Our cards have a limit for purchases, I know that because it was a pain when we were trying to buy a laptop a few years back, but big purchases like that are rare so the knowing someone can't drain my account with big purchases is nice.

And usually you can call your bank and let them know when you're making a big purchase and they'll raise the limit for a short time.

The Jimmy Johns on S. Ankeny Blvd in Ankeny was vulnerable from 7/1 - 8/1. Mint tells me I was not there in the month of July, so I think I'm safe.

I already have that free identity protection from Home Depot anyway.
