Not sure how reliable this source is but he basically says P90X is not good for you:

Dear Dream: What is P90X and Does P90X Really Work?*|*The Dream Lounge

Well I'll let the results of P90X speak for themselves. My wife and I finished P90X a couple of weeks ago. I lost 28 pounds and my wife lost 15 pounds. We didn't miss any of the workouts but we didn't follow the diet very well. If it wasn't for P90X that probably wouldn't have happened because my wife and I weren't working out like we should, which made these workouts perfect for us. P90X is perfect for anyone who needs a structured workout and can't do it themselves. I don't recommend P90X to people who are extremely out of shape though, because these dvds are very demanding and can be discouraging when you can't do certain workouts.

If you've had success with it, I think that's great.

My only comment without ever trying it is: How could you not lose weight if you're working out 90 minutes a day and 6 days a week? Assuming that you're following a sensible diet plan.

Started about 3 weeks ago. Lost about 2-3 lb so far, but can definitely tell I am gaining some muscle mass, so the weight loss/gains are a bit deceiving

hardest part for me is just finding time to work out 6-7 days a week. Some nights I don't get home until 10:00-11:00 and to throw in a 1 hour workout after that is difficult. I pry have skipped about 5 days so far, so I have actually been doing the program for about 4 weeks but only 3 weeks worth of workouts.

If I could get up early and knockout the workout in the morning before heading to my job, that would be the best for timing, just get it done and out of the way before the rest of the day takes over, but I usually feel very tired and lethargic in the morning and have a tough time getting good lift in that early. I generally can do a much better workout in the afternoon/ evening, but its the busiest part of my day.

There is only one day that takes 90 minutes and thats the yoga. These dvds are great for giving you direction. I would know I needed to work out but just wouldn't know where to start. This helps you to get into a routine which I needed.

I didn't know this when I started but P90x was not designed as a weight loss work out program. That's why they give you the nutrition guide. Their plan is/has been to lose fat and put on muscle mass, so food wise they want you to eat, eat, eat. The key, eat the right stuff that helps cut the fat and add muscle.

With that said, P90x works very well for losing weight because you do burn so many calories and it points you to the right things to eat. When you burn an extra 500 - 700 calories in a workout, when you eat 5-6 x's per day, and when you eat the right things your metabolism picks up significantly. If you then go into a slight caloric deficit the weight comes off pretty easy.

If you follow their diet plan to a "T" and are not going into a caloric deficit then that means you will maintain or lose.

For me, I lost about 22lbs in the 1st round (3months) on an ~300-400 calorie deficit per day. Or roughly 1-2 pounds of fat every two weeks. The funny thing was, I was eating 6 times a day vs. the 2 times I usually did. I was eating more food because I was burning the 500-700 calories extra per day. Since the end of the 1st 3 months I upped my calories to not lose any more weight and have leveled off. However, I have had a hard time getting those extra 300-400 calories per day (of healthy food - Cheese burgers or pizzas can do that w/1 piece). There are a few guys in the program that have added 10-12lbs of mass since they started and dropped their body fat. As I found, that's tuff to do.

In addition, whenever you add muscle your metabolic rate increases. This is why resistance training programs work well with weight loss. Resistance training taxes the muscle fibers and as they repair themselves this burn calories....so you end up burning calories while you rest.

This is also why people who go on no carb diets gain whatever weight loss they achieved back in half the time it took them to lose it. Carbs are your primary source of energy. When the body is deprived of carbs, it breaks into muscle for energy. This is why no carb diets cause weight loss and not fat loss - people become a smaller version of what they were before.

Just picked up my weights, pull up bar and mat...starting up Monday. My buddy is 2 weeks ahead of me right now, absolutely loves it...but hates Tony and his stupid soup comments.

Fair enough, thanks for the responses.

I am doubting the building muscle while burning fat line though. It's a common one. But building muscle is calorically expensive and typically a calorie surplus is necessary. Hard to lose weith at the same time.

Muscles may appear to be growing when actually fat is being removed to uncover the muscle.

You could take measurements, ie: Chest, Biceps, whatever you'd like. I can guarantee that P90X does both, build muscle and burn fat to lose weight.

Someone else may have to explain this better but my understanding is, you can reduce the amount of body fat you have and put on muscle mass at the same time. In this instant you would be in a caloric surplus and weigh more over time. On the other hand you can not put on muscle mass and lose weight at the same time because you are in a caloric deficit.

Almost finished with week one...havent been this sore since I walked onto the track team in college..actually, I'm more sore than I was then. FEELS WONDERFUL!!!! A buddy of mine is almost done with his first "rest week" and is absolutely buying into the program. We arent following the diet because we eat pretty healthy as it is. Anyone who is on the fence about this: if you have the time and if you have the drive...DO IT!

I have all the videos and plan on starting Monday. I stopped drinking pop two weeks ago so that should help with the weight loss.

Just wanted to check on everyone's progress?

I stopped drinking soda 4 years ago now, but it's funny. I had a dream the other night that I drank a Mt. Dew and I woke up feeling ashamed. Thought it was funny/sad.

I think P90X is sort of like Farrell's - and I can assure you I lost fat and gained a lot of muscle in my first 10 weeks of Farrell's. I went from about 14% bodyfat to about 7% bodyfat and gained 12 pounds. I know I'm responding to something you posted a long time ago but it's definitely possible if you follow a good nutrition plan and work out like that.
