Nevada district goes to Dayton. Gilbert is Bloomington. Ballard goes to Ken Maril road. So north, south and east are pretty much full. Not sure of the United/boone line.

I believe some of the apartments on the south side of Maricopa in SW Ames are in the United school district. The US 30/South Dakota interchange straddles the line.

The bold line is Ames. The dashed lines are school boundaries.
No, the bold line is the Ames school boundary. The lighter dash line is the Ames city limit. The heavier dotted line is boundaries shown for other schools (ie where Boone and Ballard meet).

The map is super confusing, but the dotted lines within "Ames" are the city boundary. The bold line is the district boundary. The dotted lines outside "Ames" just show boundaries between other districts.
There also dotted lines inside the bold line which is throwing me off. I do know Nevada goes clear to the trailer park just off Dayton by Peterson pits. I may have been off on Ballard some but there still isn’t a lot of room for development within Ames district.

The rankings give Gilbert the edge because of smaller class sizes and far fewer low income students. Ames still blows Gilbert away in curriculum and college preparedness. People move to north Ames because of all the new construction in north Ames. Moving there for the school district is secondary at best. We live in the Gilbert school district but our kids go to Ames because the curriculum is better.
Here is the latest report cards for the two districts, Gilbert than Ames

Every building in the Gilbert district was ranked higher than any building in the Ames district.

Waterloo
Why isn't Waterloo West in the same conference as Cedar Falls and the Cedar Rapids schools?
They are.

The Mississippi Valley is Waterloo West, Cedar Falls, Western Dubuque, Dubuque Senior, Dubuque Hempstead, Dubuque Wahlert, CR Jefferson, CR Washington, CR Kennedy, CR Xavier, Linn-Mar, Prairie, Iowa City City High, Iowa City West, Iowa City Liberty.

Gilbert also has the lowest percent of FRL students in the entire state. It shouldn’t shock anyone that they are ranked higher than Ames based on that number alone.

My stepdaughter did the same, we lived in Gilbert SD but she opted to go to Ames for a bigger variety of class options.

Ames grad here, it's sad to me to see this. When I was a kid Ames clobbered all the DSM schools and ran the league. Boy how times have changed.
They aren't getting out of the Alliance Conference because they aren't clobbering those schools, they are getting out because they are, and because of the travel. Norwalk, DCG, Indianola and to a lesser extent Pella and Newton will bring more competition and less travel. Hopefully Urbandale reconsiders and joins now.

What was the reasoning that people used to say that Urbandale should stay in the CIML? They seem so out of place there now.

State rankings? Lol! Look at the national rankings that aren't biased.
Gilbert ranked higher there also, their high school was ranked #2 in the state according to US New and world report, while Ames was ranked #32. Lol!

For higher learning top 10 type of students, having more choice and more AP classes are very important, but that is not the vast majority of your students.
Both districts are very good schools, some of the best in the nation, each has their own strengths and weaknesses.

How did Gilbert compare in terms of college preparedness and curriculum? Lower than Ames. My sons are taking AP and higher level courses which Ames exceeds at when compared to Gilbert. For our family, Ames makes way more sense than Gilbert.

I haven't even mentioned all the extracurricular activies Ames has that Gilbert doesn't.

Great for you and your situation, but most students are not taking those AP courses. If you are a higher learning level student, then go to Ames, if you are an average to below average you are better off going to a school with smaller class sizes and not getting lost in the crowd.
Athletically the Gilbert district has been performing at a very high level over the past 10 years or so. So unless you are doing one of the niche sports, you are going to be better off playing at the smaller school that is winning than getting killed at the larger school. Larger districts are always going to have more extracurricular than smaller schools, it's just a numbers game.

Definitely agree. Ames middle school is one of the toughest schools I’ve been too. My kids will not go to Ames. We live in Nevada, but hopefully move before they start school, and Ames isn’t an option.
Not sure why anyone laughs at this. Ames school district sucks. They quickly went from the top school in Story county to the bottom in less than 15 years.
