I don't think replay is necessarily the issue. The original calls hold so much weight in those decisions that often times the replay can't change a questionable call. They need to do better on the field or stop with the need for irrefutable evidence. Both of the reviewws tonight that went for Alabama were going to stay with the call on the field even though it seemed like the wrong call just because the call on the field went to Alabama.

The first call was overturned - they called it a fumble and recovery by OU on the field and replay ruled he was down.

Each official is graded on a 10 point scale for every game. Grading will be crowd sourced here on CF. Bottom 2 officials from each game will be required to fight to the death. Only way to avoid the death match is if all officials receive a perfect 10 score. Problem solved.

Yes, and the officials that oversee the officials should be overseen by another group of officials, who are overseen by chimps.
Withold 50% of their salary each game pending a game review by experts to grade the job they did. Then balance of pay accordingly. Criteria would need to be developed. Suspension also an option.
BTW - tough job I think, and nobody is perfect.

Some crews just don't have their **** together. It's like anything else in life. The key is to keep the ones that don't from being in games that matter. I agree with Leach, let's pay them more and have a larger pool to draw from and ultimately the bad ones will be working KU-Akron and watching bowl games on their TV like the rest of us, while the better ones get rewarded for doing a better job.

What I was thinking about when I watched the Leaf video, is that bad FBS refs would move down to FCS and good FCS refs would move up to FBS. But I agree that bad P5 refs could move to non-P5 conferences and vice versa. I see Leaf's system where a bad FBS ref ends up doing high school games in a couple of years because he keeps getting downgraded.

Put me in a centralized booth with a 12 pack and allow me to make all the calls. After a few beers I have all the right answers.

I have never understood why each conference has their own refs - the rules are the same for all so it should be managed centrally. Pay based on performance and of course the evaluation should be open and transparent. This doesn't seem to be that hard to fix / improve.

It should be like everything else, reward the good crews. It's the same way good workers are rewarded in regular jobs. If a crew does a good job, give scaled pay bonuses and reward them with high profile games. A rewards system might also give some incentive to expand the referee pool. I think more people will be interested in becoming a referee if there's a rewards system. And just like in the real world, if you perform poorly, or really screw up, you're done.

Get rid of replay, I think it causes more harm than good. Officials seem less confident in their calls knowing that they are always subject to review. Nothin infuriates me more than watching a play over and over only to have them "rule" the exact opposite of what I saw as plainly as the nose on my face. ie. Friday the "incomplete" catch that would have been a 1st down, Liberty Bowl last year - DM clearly in the end zone yet called a "fumble", KSU last year -no penalty X3 even though multiple officials all threw flags, Texas in '13 - no Longhorn fumble even though the ISU player was racing toward the end zone with the ball. Those are just the most egregious ones that come to mind. Or adopt an NFL type system where a coach can challenge maybe one call per quarter. This would put control back into the coaches hands and help with the pace of the game. The inconsistency is what drives me crazy. I think Leach made several great points as well.

Nothing fixes poor officiating like more points than the opponent, fewer turnovers and no false starts.

While I agree we could of overcome the bad officiating and still won; fact is we didn't. Thus I don't want to see ANY of these officials at the IOWA game at the jack next year, as I think we use BIG officials for that game. My wife thought I popped my vocal chords BOOOOOOOOOOOOOing at the dome; not sure i could go through that at Jack Trice again!!! Hopefully JP can reject this crew if the BIG10 assigns it to our game vs EIU.
