Somewhere in the U.S.
I can't believe the number of people who are supporting JP in this response, if indeed it is truly from him.

This is really how you want your AD to respond to fans? Seriously?

This is not the type of response I would expect at all from an AD. It is extremely unprofessional, and shows a level of arrogance that is almost unbelievable.

What good does it do to respond to a fan like that? Is this response going to make him a donor or season-ticket holder? Is it going to make him encourage others to do so? Is it going to help him continue to be an ISU fan, or encourage others to become fans? Why respond this way...........just to stroke JP's ego? Come on people!

I hope this was not really the response from JP. If it is, then I think ISU Athletics are not in good hands at all. What is even more sad, is that so many people are on here supporting this response, real or not. Those of you who support this......is this really how you want your AD to be treating fans? If it is, explain what good it does.

Matt Rainey is not a Cyclone fan. Period. This shows the lack of research and journalistic integrity displayed by KXnO on a daily basis. Where is the Phillip Jones/Marcus Mills F/Up Show? Where I ask you?

Frankly, whether or not he is or isn't a Cyclone fan is irrelevant. (Are we sure he is the one who actually sent the email by the way)

The relevant point is JP's reaction. JP has no idea if the guy is a Cyclone fan and thus should assume he is. It's still extremely stupid to say those things to a potential donor.

Yes, but creative should never include a clause that would extend the coaches contract because of Jiri's minor infraction that had no bearing on the future of the program. You can be creative and still be intelligent. The 2 years for losing 2 schollies in the first year that wouldn't have been filled seems excessive but at least some argument could be made for that (though obviously 6 years is plenty of time to overcome 2 lost scholarships that would not have been filled anyway).

Bottom line he got a 9-yr contract before coaching a game. That's an awfully big risk on an unproven commodity. Its resulted in no room to make a change... so nothing left to do at this point but hope Gmac turns it around in Year 5. Looking at our current recruiting, our best hope is that the Iowa JCs are awesome this year!
I all fairness the NCAA infraction was probably put in there for the rumors surrounding the D1 Scheduling allegations vs Jiri. It wasn't until after McDermott was hired that the Jiri issue became an issue. So Jiri's issue had no impact on the contract being written the way it was.

These talk show guys are the biggest drama queens out there. Oh my gosh Jamie said, WHAT? They are like a bunch of high school girls. Come on...talk about upcoming events like wrestling, bball, and spring football.

Yeah, I can just see Matt reading that letter: "POLLARD SAID THAT??? OH MY GOD!!! THAT'S HUGE!!! I'M SHOCKED THAT AN AD WOULD SAY SOMETHING LIKE THAT!! SHOCKED, I TELL YOU!!!".

Wow, get over it. Why not actually talk about sports than try to stir up controversy? Because honestly, that's exactly what this is. Jon had the right initial impression. Let it go.

Wow, epic fail by that guy if it's truly the same poster. That poster has been TRASHING players on here lately.

yeah, some fan. I'm not sure why anyone would be concerned about losing the support of a 19 year old Marquette student who bashes players on both our football and basketball teams.

+1

I'm not understanding this either. You'll never gain fans if the only people you treat with respect are the ones who are already donating.

Actually, the response he gave me three years ago when I told him I didn't think the music at football games was doing its job was extremely defensive like this one was. That's why I didn't say "I don't think this is real," because I have had personal experience with JP when he sends an unfavorable email back.

Maybe because is was about music at football games. :goofy:

Go listen to the podcast from todays show at kxno.com, then come back and readdress this with me.

I happened to tune in on the way to work this morning and you did lay it on the line today regarding the Iowa BB program.

My opinion is Iowa is one year ahead of the Iowa State program in the justification to make a coaching change. Iowa State is still selling season basketball tickets which makes it easier to justify giving McDermott more time. 2010 we will see if there is a significant drop off.

Iowa has already experienced a sudden drop in season ticket sales. Couple that with 5,000 people actually showing up at the home games justifies Barta doing something this year.

I would expect an even louder amount of crying from the local media of getting rid of Lickliter than what there has been for McDermott. Maybe there is on the hawk message boards but the local talk radio shows do not seem to have the same angst for getting Lickliter fired vs. McDermott. (That was of course until I listened today).

Also, congratulations to Deace for being able to keep quiet for more than 60 seconds while you talked. It was refreshing to actually be able to hear you put together a 2-3 minute monologue withouth being interuppted.

Sounds like today's society. Here is your 10th place trophy. Thanks for participating.

My thoughts are you are either in or out. You support the athletic department by donating to the NCC and prushasing tickets. If you do not, there are no first place loser trophies.

+2 Exactly..someone in JP's position should know how to respond to people for his job considering he should know this. Now, if this was from his personal email, it might be different, but it's from his business email. Different rules IMO.

I hope it's not JP's response, but I have a feeling it is considering how he responded to me three years ago about a matter.

If this email exchange is legit, it wasn't a good move by JP from a PR standpoint. I have no problems with him thinking these things, but putting them in writing, which by the way included some typos (no big deal to some, but to others it is, especially when it comes from someone in JP's position), looks tacky. Almost like, "them's fightin words!" Unfortunately, this is the kind of stuff that media types love and will circulate until it finds its way to some bigger fish like ESPN, etc. Seriously, I've worked in PR for many years and can tell you stuff like this, if legit, makes the news.

Again, I have no problem with what JP was thinking here, but I think he should've left out a few areas like where he called the fan an embarrassment, etc. Just my opinion.

It's easier to talk about ISU because there is more of a debate on whether or not to keep Mac and there are more angles (buyout, financial feasability, who's might leave if they make a change, etc). On the Iowa side their is far less debate and far fewer angles. Iowa has the money, the fans have made their opinions well known, now it's wait and see. This year the media and fans treated Iowa basketball as a running joke. If Lick comes back next year that joke will turn to anger. And a lot of that anger will be directed at Barta.
