Here's KD's whole letter. No secrets in there.
Happy Postseason to All!
I want to start by thanking all of you who came out to watch us this past season. I also want to give a special shoutout to those of you who followed us at the
Big 12 Championships and at the
NCAA Tournament last month.
As your head coach, I want to state we obviously didn’t have the season or the postseason we had planned on. Producing Trophy Teams takes the right line up of athletes, and we didn’t have those athletes available when we needed them. The silver lining is the fact that we did get some guys into the lineup at the NCAA tournament who none of us had figured into the equation at the beginning of the season!
Jacob Frost at 141 pounds earned
All American honors with a 7th place finish as a sophomore! That was definitely the bright spot for us last month in Philadelphia.
Otherwise, our roster suffered from one injury after another all season long, and that was very hard to overcome. With the exception of Evan Bockman at 184, all of the other 7 NCAA qualifiers were freshmen or sophomores. Not only were we a very beat up and battered team, but a very young team that had seen all of its more-seasoned members sidelined by injuries.
I do want to take a minute to thank
Kysen Terukina, Zach Redding, Casey Swiderski, and Cody Chittum for the wins that they provided our program these past couple of years. All four of these guys have gotten into the Transfer Portal this postseason and will be competing for other institutions. I believe kids get into the portal for one of three reasons: First, to get paid more money. Second, because they don’t see a spot for themselves in our future lineup. And finally, because they don’t think this coaching staff can help them get it done.
One thing is for sure: We are going to see an annual change in rosters moving forward unless and until the NCAA decides to change the way the Transfer Portal works.
The other thing to remember is, the Transfer Portal works both ways. We have about a half dozen recruits coming in over the month of April who want to learn more about joining our team. I can’t talk about specifics yet, but I can assure you our roster will look a little bit different at the end of April -- like many Division 1 wrestling rosters.
I also want to give everyone an update on our guys who were injured this past year.
Connor Euton (165) is recovering from a torn ACL suffered in the Iowa dual. He will be back live wrestling by midsummer.
Sawyer Bartelt (184) also is recovering from an ACL tear and he will be able to go live by late summer.
Yonger Bastida (285) will be 100 percent by May 1 and is healing up nicely. Yonger injured his knee in early November wrestling around with one of our back up HWT’s. I know! Play wrestling = horsing around like wrestlers do every day of their lives.
Anthony Echemendia (141) has one more surgery to remove metal braces from his first ankle surgery and is projected to be back to full go by June 1. Anthony suffered a high ankle sprain in early December at the Las Vegas Invitational and we did what was supposed to be a minor surgery to repair it. His plan was to be back in mid-January and he was on track to do that until some unexpected infection set in and then it got real serious, real quick. Needless to say, the rehab went from 6 weeks to 3.5 months very quickly. And that story right there kind of sums up our season.
Moving forward. I truly feel we have a tremendous returning team. We also need to have a great summer of training that will start the last week of May. And to put the best team on the mat for 2025-26, we need to have some good luck like all teams do. Later this summer, I will come out with a newsletter on our projected lineup. Per NCAA rules, our roster (like most others) is going to be limited next season to 30 guys. But I think we can put together 30 very strong members moving into next season.
Thanks again for following us. And note, we are going to be just fine!
