I'll also throw in that the fact that this is a big deal in Ames speaks well of Ames culture. This might not even make the news in Chicago.

Totally agree on this point. I was in Philadelphia and shocked that the police there seemed to ignore minor violations of the law on the streets and roads (many that I know police would get you for back here in Iowa.) Until I heard they had almost 400 murders in 2007 I believe. So they had more than 1 person die on average per day in their city, it hit me why things like unbuckled seatbelts/car lights out/etc. were not enforced as severely. Bigger fish to fry. Makes me happy about where I live that I don't have to worry about my safety to the extent I would in a place like Chicago or Philly. It really does speak well about Ames and this state overall.

I'm going to respond to this... and then I will be done with this thread...

We aren't talking about homeless people. There is no law that would allow you to arrest a person just because they live in Section 8 housing. That is what you are trying to claim. Not every person who moves in to section 8 housing is a criminal. In fact, I would guess that very, very few are.

I have a feeling that you have no logical rebuttal for any of my posts, so I guess we will have to agree to disagree... I believe we live in a free country, and you think that "undesirables" shouldn't be allowed to live in Ames, IA.

I will respond to this issue one more time as well. My reference to homeless people was a reference to your incorrect interpretation of the term exporting, not homeless people. I'm not advocating what you said. Don't put words in my mouth. Yet you're continued refusal to admit it only strenghens my arguement. We can aggressively enforce laws which either encourage those in question to either comply, or make it so uncomfortable on them that they choose to leave.

People SHOULD be free to live where they want, along as they abide by the rules of the community they choose and do so on their own dime. But just because a city like Chicago has low expectations of its' citizens, doesn't mean that Ames should lower their expectations to the same level. If you feel that it's ok to continue to encourage poor lifestyle choices of the lower class, then YOU pay for it.

I know the suspect has at least 2 kids with one of them being a 12 -13 yeard old son. Seemed like a nice guy the couple of times I met him. Nothing to lead you to believe he would be suspected of these crimes.

He played basketball at State Gym on Saturday mornings I believe with a group of older guys (35 - 50 year olds).

The suspect has been apprehended in North Carolina.

I didn't realize until today that the women I referred to initially was the one who was murdered and the one who lived near me. There are too many identical stories like this. The Casey's murder earlier this year was similar. I don't know what can be learned from the event since the police knew this person was violent and a repeat offender.

What can be learned is that the City of Ames is merely letting these problems occur...Mid-Iowa Newspapers - Group files injunction to stop Section 8 data release

Ames has been accepting Section 8 housing applications for a few years now, and has been screening the applicants by only checking their Iowa backgrounds/records. That does a lot of good when most these people are coming from the south side of Chicago....

I am Shakena's younger cousin. It is unfortionate for my family to have to go through such a terrible loss at this time. All we ask is that everyone pray for our family. There were many factors in Atiba's and Shakena's relationship that people on the outside looking in could never understand. People are trying to portray Atiba as a monster and those of us who new him knows otherwise. It only takes a person a second to snap and that's exactly what he did. Instead of passing blind judgement pray for us. Treat the ones you love with kindness and respect.
