"non-traditional" means not someone from the academic community, e.g. a Dean, a Provost, a President from a smaller university...

I am not against the idea per se, but academia is a really different animal from business. You need someone with some familiarity with academia, even if they haven't made it their whole career. You have to convince and charm people, its not like you are the CEO with absolute power. Not every business person understands or is capable of that.

Mitch Daniels at Purdue would be a better example than Harreld.
