While there is a lot of low hanging fruit in terrible movies, I prefer the hot takes that movies that a lot of people like actually suck.

With that in mind, Animal House is ******* horrible. Not funny at all. I felt like it's as if a bunch of 5th graders watched Blazing Saddles and said, "we can do this too!"

I still think it is funny but it lacks for... empathetic characters.

The older I get the worse the Delta House guys look. They're supposed to be satirizing a corrupt establishment, but I'm not sure they're offering anything better or more compelling.

The way they treat women is... yikes.

A product of it's time. Revenge of the Nerds is the same way. So much stuff in both of those movies wouldn't fly today.

No story line, no plot, a whole lot o'nada.
My sister-in-law and her hubby told us it was a great movie that we should check out...of course they do live in nebraska!

Speaking of Hitler, here is a Sam Elliot classic . . . .

View attachment 149445

Sam Elliott is married to Katharine Ross.

And he gave me a personal introduction to His Dudeness.

He's a hero. Luckiest man in the world.

Comedy on the whole doesn't always age well across eras and cultures.

I think some stuff is timeless (I'll never not think Smokey and the Bandit and The Blues Brothers and Monty Python and the Holy Grail aren't absolutely hilarious) but some stuff very much is not.

Everybody hear acting like Battlefield Earth doesn't exist.

Hot take -- Battlefield Earth is a terrible movie.

But it has some "so bad it's good" qualities if you go into it thinking it's a B-movie self-parody.

The stupid plot. John Travolta hammin' it up. The braindead Scientology allegories.

Pretty funny if you think of it more like Fallout than 2001: A Space Odyssey.

My dad loves Animal House because he was in college when it came out. It’s kinda like how everyone says all the best music came out when they were in high school and college…

I watched it with him when I was in college and he was laughing so hard. I liked it but it’s definitely just another dumb comedy. Plenty of those in this world, but the right thing experienced at the right time in life can create an outsized impact on a person

I think it at the time it came out...late 70s...it was really pushing the limits of appropriate comedy in theaters. So...viewed next to Superbad (which I also love) or a movie like that it seems like another comedy...but it was ground-breaking and certainly set the stage for future comedy films.

Yeah, there are some pretty questionable plotlines and dialogue. The funny story they tell about Paxston's character approaching a twister in his skivvies drunk and throwing his whiskey bottle into the funnel is about as suspect as they get.

Fun fact about Twister. The guy who played Laurence, Jeremy Davis, who is also famous for roles such as Upham in Saving Private Ryan, Dr. Faraday in Lost, and Dickie in Justified, lived in Rockford, Iowa for a few years. One of my coworkers was friends with him in high school and they still connect from time to time.

Also, apparently when Bill Paxston died over 200 storm chasers coordinated to spell out BP with their GPS trackers on a radar screen. This had been done a few times before to honor individuals, but never for someone who wasn't an actual storm chaser.
Interesting stuff. I recognized Jeremy Davis after seeing him in Lost and SPR and then re-watching Twister. That had to have been one of his 1st major film roles.

And I'd imagine the storm chasers honoring Paxton had a lot to do with the movie bringing attention to that (storm chasing) and how it can ultimately improve the science around tornadoes, despite the cheesiness of said plotlines.

Pulp Fiction because it resuscitated Travolta’s dead career and gave us 30 more years of bad Travolta movies.

I guess I view Animal House and Blazing Saddles as almost opposite ends of the spectrum. Blazing Saddles came out in 1974 and was a funny and sharp satire calling out racism and other bigotry.

Animal House came out in 1978 and WAS racist and horribly misogynistic.

Blazing Saddles pushed the limits of content for its time and used satire and humor to mock ignorance prevalent at the time. Animal House pushed the limits of content but by tapping into and even celebrates these views.

Has any of the Sharknado movies been mentioned?

No but something as sincere as the first Sharknado can’t truly be awful

I think something like the Marvels or Star Wars Episode 9 are truly horrible given the man hours and money put into making them
I mentioned it earlier in the thread, but I agree with Oscar that the first Sharknado really shouldn’t be the answer be ause it’s earnest. Same thing with something like The Room or Troll 2.

I think you could say a later sharknado movie, because at that point it’s in on the joke

Just a correction - my fault, not yours. It's Jeremy Davies.

Damned auto-correct.

The Grey is terrible. Super depressing. Liam Neeson and a bunch of man eating wolves.
