I'll never understand the nostalgia the kids these days have for 1-3.

There are a lot of cool Star Wars-y ideas and potential meaty character and plot elements. They just never come together as they did in A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back.

The execution is just terrible and the CGI-heavy effects are not aging well.

I give them credit for having ideas and ambitions and influences outside of simply rehashing the original trilogy, though. Lucas tried and failed but at least he tried to make something worthy.

Disney didn't even try.
Agree. George had his overarching plotline (Anakin's downfall) to follow, but dreadful dialogue and an inability to keep it tight were enormous problems. I think he just creates in such broad visualizations, that the details get neglected. Think of the amazing backdrops, like works of art. Then sloppily throw in some talking bits that are 8th grade level writing. Argh. Wasted opportunities...

But they have some of my favorite SW moments amongst the drek. TPM has history's best sword fight. ROTS has Ian McDiarmid just tearing it up when he reveals himself, dynamite scene as he circles Anakin.

He had so much going for him. He's always been great at "big picture" stuff like the basic plot, themes, characters, cool fantasy/sci-fi elements, and building an imaginative world.

He's just so bad at the details of filmmaking to make them all come together.

He could have any director, writer, and actors that he wanted. Give them the "big picture" stuff and be the CEO of the film and let those talented people around you "cook" as the kids say.

He's got Natalie Portman and Ewan McGregor in 2/3 main roles -- each is one of the most charming actors of their generation. Frank Oz is back. James Earl Jones is back for the end. He's added badass old dudes like Christopher Lee, Liam Neeson, and the Bad MFer himself. Ian McDiarmid is back, has aged perfectly, and gives a performance that makes me wonder why his film career never blossomed outside Star Wars.

John Williams is back. I don't think he consistently matched the OT, but tracks like "Duel of the Fates" and "Battle of the Heroes" stand up to anything heard in the original trilogy.

He just picked a bad writer (himself) and director (himself). You can have ANYBODY.

Call Lawrence Kasdan up to make a 10-15 page summary into a real screenplay. Or maybe give a young writer/director who is a total sci-fi nerd (Quentin Tarantino? Kevin Smith?) take a shot.

Director? Again, anybody you want. Maybe something like this?

Give the action-oriented opener to an up-and-comer with an eye for dynamic visual pizzazz like... JJ Abrams. Yeah, you're going to have to watch him closely, but he'll kick it off with a bang. I'd loved to see his take on "the chariot sequence from Ben-Hur... in space!" instead of Lucas' rather subdued version.

Give the finale to Spielberg. Finally time for him to direct a Star Wars film.

Give the more discursive middle episode to a genre veteran like...

Terry Gilliam
Ridley Scott
Kenneth Branagh
Robert Zemeckis
Luc Besson
Sam Mendes
Tim Burton
(or heck Tarantino or Smith I'm sure they'd love to)

No Jake Lloyd -- what happened to him was tragic and avoid it by starting Anakin off as a teenager or young man not a child. Nobody likes child actors. No Hayden Christensen. He's not a bad actor but wasn't right for the role. Open up your checkbook and go and get Leo. He'd been perfect. Irresistibly charming and eminently capable of showing the burning emotions of Anakin Skywalker turning him from the light.

Leo and Natalie prints you money from the young female audience.

And no ******* Jar Jar unless you're going to have the iron will to pull the "Darth Jar Jar" twist to blow the twist at the end of The Empire Strikes Back completely out of the water.

It could have been so awesome.

But it was just so lame.

The dreadful Julia Louis-Dreyfus? I'm not going to try and defend her role in the marvel movies and I dont really care about that, but she's been a major part of two of the best sitcoms of the last 40 years. She's far from dreadful.
Seinfeld and what is the 2nd?

I'm not sure I'd like a Tarantino/Burton version of Star Wars.

Those are edge candidates but there were plenty of more "conventional" directors available, too. Every director in Hollywood would have considered that call from George Lucas in the 90s a highlight of their life.

If I could send you back in time to kill Hitler in 1925, or send you back to make George do this your way in 1995... it's a really tough call.

While there is a lot of low hanging fruit in terrible movies, I prefer the hot takes that movies that a lot of people like actually suck.

With that in mind, Animal House is ******* horrible. Not funny at all. I felt like it's as if a bunch of 5th graders watched Blazing Saddles and said, "we can do this too!"

The sequel conflict to the Great War was probably inevitable at some level. It wasn't on one man.

Germany wasn't happy with the postwar settlement. Stalin had ambitions to conquer Europe. Japan was already in the process of trying to conquer China and much of Asia by the 1930s even before 1939. Something was going to give at some point and it wasn't going to be pretty when it finally did.

The failures of the prequels fall squarely on one man, though.

Build your time machine and I'm happy to go back and make him do it right.
