Big fan of Wilbo's in Cedar Falls. Otherwise, I prefer a home cooked burger over charcoal than most restaurants.

Can't think of a best one off hand but Shorts in IA City is great. Wish Ames had something like that in campustown (yes I know there's a Freddys).

Each of these have been great for me. I don't remember the specific burgers I've eaten.

Saucy Focaccia in Cedar Rapids
Burgerfiend in Cedar Rapids
Red's Alehouse in North Liberty
Shorts in Iowa City

I'm with Clonehomer on the home cooked over charcoal, fresh ground burger from the local butcher. If I had to pick a restaurant though, Lucky Monk in South Barrington, IL. It is one of the few sit down restaurants I go to where I will actually order a burger.

Bacon. The best burger is topped with bacon and has bacon cooked into it.

Speaking of Matt's, I've had it and liked it. Heading up to St. Paul in a couple of weeks and thought I would try out The Nook. Thoughts?

Best I've had in recent memory was Exile's self named burger:
Ground chuck, Ruthie onion bacon jam, white cheddar, onion haystack & truffle aioli

If we're talking chains the answer is Culver's.

Shorts is tops on my list as well. I ate there at least once a week while I lived in Iowa City. Damn near the only thing that made living over there bearable. A Dundee burger with those fries...

Shutout to NW IA. The bowling alley in Ida Grove used to put together an amazing burger. There was nothing fancy about it, it was just a massive cheeseburger that was always cooked perfectly.
