Release:

AMES, Iowa –The Iowa State men’s basketball team will be traveling overseas this summer for a foreign trip, spending 10 days and nine nights in Italy and playing three games against international competition.

The trip will provide value for a Cyclone squad that could return just two of its top six scorers from last year’s NCAA Tournament team.

“We are excited to be able to take our guys on a trip that will provide them with memories and experiences that will last a lifetime,” head coach Steve Prohm said. “It will give us the opportunity to work with them more on the court in a team setting this summer and allow them to get acclimated to each other. We are grateful that our administration supports us by allowing us to take these trips.”

The trip, which will take place Aug. 10-20, will start in Rome before stops in Florence, Pisa and Venice. While Iowa State’s opponents are yet to be determined, the trip will feature historical and educational stops with tours planned of the Roman Colosseum, Vatican City, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and more.

Iowa State will be making a summer trip for the fourth time in program history. Previously, the Cyclones have traveled to Mexico (2004), Italy (2011) and Spain (2015).

The Cyclones are tentatively scheduled to play games on Aug. 13 in Rome, Aug. 15 in Pisa and Aug. 18 in Vicenza. The schedule and opponents will be confirmed in the month prior to the team departing.

Does Matt Thomas play over there? Be cool for him to stop by and watch our kids play. I think I saw he was either in Greece, Spain, or Italy. Can't remember

Spain. Pretty sure we have some guys still in Italy, but maybe not. I think Thomas and McGee are in Spain. Where's Melvin?

Looks like Melvin is in Russia. This website is (a) pleasantly old-school and (b) seems crazy thorough, though who knows how real-time updated it is. By searching Iowa State, then ExPlayers on top row, then sorting by year it looks like Dustin Hogue and Tyrus McGee may be the only former Cyclones currently in Italy. These guys move around! (I started by searching Clyburn on Eurobasket https://www.eurobasket.com/basketball-search.asp and it ended up on the USBasket one)

...just as an example for the "moving around", DeAndre Kane has played for teams in Russia (2), Israel (2), Belgium, Germany, and Spain. Also he picked up dual-Hungarian citizenship in 2017 to be able to represent them internationally!

"It was a huge change. Coming from where I’m from, kids don’t go get an undergrad degree and then work on their master's," Kane said. "When I got to Iowa St., I didn’t get one tech the whole year. Things calmed down for me a lot. It was a new slate. It was out in the middle of nowhere, Ames, Iowa, freezing cold… It was a great year to clean my mind and I had the best year I had in all of college."

On par with his accomplishments as an athlete is the pride Kane took in completing his master’s degree. "It was tough, I ain’t gonna lie, but I had a lot of help. And basketball was only a short period of time a day. And I didn’t have to go to so many classes, so I just focused on two, three classes and knocked it out, used tutors and the help program. It was cool."

Armed with two degrees and many accolades from his college basketball career, Kane began his professional career in the autumn of 2014 and it was tougher than he had expected.

"When I was in Russia, I had to adjust to people not speaking English at all. And it's freezing cold, where it's like I just want to go home, like tomorrow. I don't even care about the money or the basketball. I just want to go home."

Kane finished that first season with Antwerp in Belgium and then played the following campaign for ratiopharm Ulm in Germany. Despite the personal challenges, Kane began to appreciate these experiences. "I went to Spain, where it’s nice, beautiful, and I didn't want to go home. I wanted to stay another two months! Germany was a great experience for me. Belgium was also a nice country, nice people.

"And on the basketball side you see different things. You see different players, see how Europe really is, how different coaches teach different styles of play. It's always good to learn from different people. You take it all in and try to get better each and every day."

In 2016, Kane returned to Russia to suit up for Nizhny Novgorod and was among top performers in the 7DAYS EuroCup.

"You get to different countries and the culture is totally different," he said. "It was actually good. It was different and after a while, you get used to it. I had a great year in Russia and that’s how I was able to get to a great club like Maccabi."

...the Google Translate on the Hungarian citizenship one isn't very clear, sounds like he basically said "my agent said it was a good opportunity, and the pictures of Budapest looked nice" :p:D

Wow, that is an amazing amount of information. Thanks.

Amazing to see how many of these guys are still playing somewhere. Must be a sign that there is real hunger for basketball around the world.
