We currently have one that I hate (was a gift) and the last couple times we've used it, it's been causing or thinking it's causing a short and trips the breaker. Husband did some research and it's apparently a thing with this type of motor. So we could probably fix it but I hate it anyway so we're looking for something different. May fix it and try to Craigslist it. No robot ones for now (though I'd like one) because baby toys are all over the floors.

I've read good things about the cordless Dyson's but looks like there are many options. We really only have two carpeted rooms we use right now, the rest are tile/wood. My preferences are something that doesn't easily tip over and has attachments I can use to dust with. Cordless would be really nice too. We have no pets.

Anyone have opinions?

I have a pretty plain Hoover that was tops in consumer reports. I think it was a couple hundred. It’s not cordless but it works really well and has a dirt sensor that turns green when the floor is clean. I’m sure it’s not accurate but it is extremely satisfying ;)

The only thing I’d say is go for one with a bag rather than bag less.

Do you have pets? We have a Dyson Animal, but we have a yellow lab that sheds like crazy. The Animal is awesome but if you don't have pets it's probably overkill for you. I don't think you can go wrong with Dyson anything. My neighbor has dogs and has a Shark (not sure the model) and is happy with it as well.

For repair, I've taken mine to Windsor Vacuum on University and they're awesome. Great guys, reasonable pricing.

EDIT: Duh, missed your line about no pets.

We have a cordless Dyson and its "OK." Nothing mind blowing. It's easy to get around stuff and the head can fit under your kitchen cabinet toe kick.

We have a corded Dyson Animal (the allergy edition that is probably the same but pricier as the regular Animal).
It's amazing. An actual life-saver here. Love the power and the way it's able to vacuum without stirring anything up.

I'm going to guess your repair is in DSM and a bit of a drive from WI ;)

I've heard some say that Dyson is a champ with most carpets, but struggles a bit on medium shag to longer shag carpets. Is there any truth to that? We have few bedrooms with medium shag and haven't pulled the trigger on a Dyson yet.

We have a Dyson Animal 2 that we got for like $200 off around black friday last year. Its awesome, sucks up all the long blond hair my wife leaves everywhere and alllll the bernese mountain dog fur. Easy to manuever and carry up and down the stairs

so now I'm curious if you have a different model from @CycloneErik

We actually had charging problems with this. So I replaced with a knockoff battery and its still basically the same problem. There's a hi and low, and the hi can make it blink red and shut down.
It came with a wall hanging adapter that also holds the accessories.

So, we bought a second one, head only, and so far so good.

I'd guess that it's more likely to pull that carpet from the floor than to struggle cleaning it.

Not exactly sure.
Go with the central vac system. My wife does cleaning non stop, (I can be stirring supper with a spoon, turn around to work on something else, and the spoon is in the dishwasher already; just to let you know how clean she wants everything), and she will quite often use the vac on all surfaces. Makes the corner clean ups around the counter fairly quick honestly. Behm has a solid central vac system.

If you're in Des Moines, go to University Vacuum(formerly Windsor Vacuum). Get a Riccar. They are not cheap, but you'll get a quality product that will last for many, many years. It's a family business that has been there for years.
