This sucks, tbh. All of us non-director level donors keep getting charged more for less. Stage door was a great place for us to hang out before and after games, and now we get pushed out with no replacement even though our donation went up (again).
I agree. I knew Johnny's was moving and I get why, but I was hoping there was going to be space to bring back stage door as well.

For as great as the football overall game day experience is there really isn't anything for basketball. I get it is a totally different animal being in the winter, but stage door was a really cool place to meet up and watch some other games and find some other fans to talk to. Seems like they would have enough space in Schemann to have both. Give the Directors fancy seats, fancy drinks and free food. I just need a folding chair and an Ames Lager.

There is probably some thinking that Cy Town helps with the game day experience. Feels like you are going to have to get there really early to have a seat at the bar/restaurant there though.

In the short term, I agree, but the vision of CyTown, when all complete, is that there will be multiple venues to be able to do this, including at the hotel

But enough capacity to serve the basketball gameday crowd? I'm doubtful. I know not everyone is going to want to get food or a drink but there will be way more demand than capacity on game days I think.

I am completely disappointed that the hotel won’t be a Graduate Hotel. I stayed at the one in Cincinnati and it was amazing. Some might find them gaudy, but they are perfect for this location. Iowa City has one, so I guess that’s all there will be.

It's a tough spot to be in balance the business sides for both parties. ISU obviously wants to do donor development. ISU's renters need customers. I don't envy whoever had to decide where to draw the line.

Has the hotel brand been announced?

With the number of people that were going to Stage Door for a busy Saturday Big 12 conference game, I don’t see CyTown establishments meeting the demand when CyTown will be open to everyone.

Having said that, we don’t have any details for CyTown establishments yet.

I am mildly surprised there are enough Directors level donors to fill the Scheman space that was originally taken up by Stage Door.

While they position this as an exciting upgrade, it doesn’t seem so to me. The people who went to the Stage Door are now SOL. The new venue is clearly nicer, but it is not on the concourse and it is closed during the game. I’ll let the Directors chime in whether it is better for them, because they are the only ones who this could benefit.

Am I the only one that hasn't heard of Stage Door? What is (was) it?
The second level of Scheman sold beer and food. It was only publicly advertised to Cyclone Club donors (and perhaps only certain levels?). You didn’t have to have tickets/wristband (like Johnny’s) and they didn’t verify Cyclone Club membership. So, to be honest, anyone could go.

Pluses and minuses.

It is unfortunate there will no longer be access at halftime.

However the existing Johnnys was so crowded it honestly kind of sucks during many conference games. You can't move around in there at all, nowhere to set food\drink unless you're one of the early people who gets to a table, etc.

I predict that they will reconsider opening at halftime. People seem to have raced to it at halftime in previous seasons. They’re gonna be a lot of complaints.

Having to go over to Scheman would give the "I gotta leave my seat with 4:00 left in the game to beat the traffic" crowd some practice reps at the end of the first half.

It had to only be advertised to certain levels- I’m a Gold Donor and never heard of it until yesterday.

If cytown can't meet the needs for a men's basketball game then that's a big fail, if it's too small for a basketball game then it'll be a mad house for football games (maybe it'll only be open to certain donor levels on football home games?). What percentage of the 14k fans (minus students) will go there before/after games, especially the school night games?

I assume the brew pub thing will be large, it's supposed to be two floors. I'm envisioning something like the Big Grove location in Des Moines big, more like a beer hall. That's what I hope at least.

If I were them, I would open up Johnnys on weekends and make some money. I would also keep it open during games. There’s no reason why you would shut it down for 2 hours and then open it back up. Just the halftime crowd would pay for the costs. Not that I’m a big enough donor to get in there. That said, I’ve gotten wristbands to the old Johnnys in the past and it was so crowded I could hardly get a beer. The next time I had access to it I just passed. Not worth fighting that crowd.
