I’m always looking for movies people love but maybe flew under the radar for the masses. Any suggestions? I have a lot and notice many are from the 90s. Oh well hah.

Bound. One hell of a fun crime/mafia thriller.

Flirting with Disaster. Honestly one the best comedies ever. ******* hilarious and the cast is insane. I won’t link the trailer because it is so cheesy. Movie is great.

October Sky. True story. Great coming of age story. Cry ever time.

Hachi. Another true story. If you have a dog have a box or two of Kleenex.

Sunshine. One of the best sci-fi thrillers of the last 25 years. Again the cast is stellar and directed by the great Danny Boyle.

Hostiles. One of the worst marketing campaigns ever. This is possible my favorite western movie ever made and my favorite movie the year this came out. Again. The cast is amazing.

Grandma's Boy is a comedy cult classic. Pan's Labyrinth is somewhat known but excellent fantasy picture. A Scanner Darkly is trippy with some big names. Kung Fu Hustle is one of my personal favorite movies of all time.
Funny Games was an independent horror remake that is visceral, I enjoyed that at the Fleur Theatre a long time ago.

“Song of the Sea”:

It is a gorgeous representative of possibly my favorite genre, severe childhood trauma as parable or fantasy (eg, Pan’s Labyrinth, Radio Flyer, etc).

Another that is not well known compared to other Spielberg epics is “Empire of the Sun”:

This might be partially because of my age when it was released, but it immediately became my favorite Spielberg movie. It has a scene at the end that was just the right level of heavy-handed symbolism for my pubescent brain at the time (and maybe qualifies it for the severe childhood trauma as parable or fantasy genre).

It gets bonus points for starring Christian Bale in his first ever role.

Cabin in the Woods might count in this category? Chris Hemsworth before he hit it big. Moments that have you laughing out loud and some truly excellent horror moments as well. That scene on the dock where he's chasing her with the bear trap. Never forget it.

Song of the Sea actually got a few tears out of me. Both me and my 9 year old watched it together a couuple of years ago and absolutely loved it. If you liked it, it is the second movie by the same studio that did Secret of Kells and then Wolfwalkers, which are both just as equally amazing.
