You guys are missing the main point. The original poster said the cop was using a REVOLVER. Are we in the wild west or does the ankeny police need to upgrade their artillery? :biglaugh:

I have only had a couple of incidents where a police officer has been "emphatic" with me.

The first was my fault. I was young and got pulled over for running a red light. I wasn't wearing my seatbelt, so I thought to avoid a ticket, I would just get out of my car when I stopped. Not a smart move. That's a good way to get a gun drawn on you. Suffice to say the officer explained why it was not a good idea, and I will never do it again. Didn't get the seatbelt ticket, though.

Another time happened just about a year ago in Florida. I was driving down a little county road, and I entered a town where the speed limit dipped from 55 to 45. I was slowing down, but the officer got me going 53 in a 45. I was maybe 50 yards past the speed limit change sign. I was not rude to him at all, but he started by asking me "Why are you in such a hurry?" I told him I wasn't in a hurry, but that I was just slowing down to the speed limit in town. I explained that I was not from the area, and that I didn't know the road at all. I think I said I was sorry about 6 times. He immediately started getting ticked off at me, and was like "Oh, I can tell you're from out of town." I was in a rental car, and when I told him that my proof of insurance was in my briefcase in the back seat, and that I would need to get out of the car to get it, he told me that he ought to "run me in" for wasting his time. Finally he let me get out of the car, and get him the proof of insurance. He ended up writing me a ticket for speeding. When I finally got to my destination in Gainesville, I mentioned the incident to some people that I was meeting with, and they all laughed. I guess this particular town has pretty well known speed trap, and they get people all the time. nearly everyone that I talked to about it had also received a ticket in the same place.

Was it Lawtey, Florida? I was pulled over there on my way from Jacksonville to Gainesville last November.

EDIT -- Nevermind. Lawtey is about 19 miles up the road from Waldo.

were you in Starke, Fl? Waldo?? Had to be one of the two, HAD to...

Waldo, yes. See what I mean. This is apparently a world famous speed trap.

Like I said, I want hard, provable numbers. Exactly by how much is drilling two holes to put a license plate frame on a Corvette going to kill the value? Until you provide a hard number, your assertion is worthless.
It won't kill the value. It will reduce it.

Look around at Corvettes; you won't see any C6's with front plates. Walk into a dealership and you won't find any new or used ones with plates. Even on a new one you would have to specifically ask for a front bracket to be installed; I'm sure they would confirm you are that stupid several times before doing it. So if you put it on you will lose money on a trade or private sale. It's a fact. Unless you find the rare buyer that's ok with it.

What did it cost me? I'd say $500 to $1000 on a 4 year old car. I heard later the used car manager was going to give it a month to sell before having it fixed.

I understand that the vast majority of cars won't have their resale value hurt in any way. But there are plenty of cars running around Iowa where it would.

What is that practical purpose? Does the purpose outweigh the costs of producing the plates?
A State Trooper told me they like them because it gives a good consistent place to use for checking speed.

It's also an easy way to pull people over.

It can be revenue generating if they want it to be. Apparently Texas has started using it as such; I'm no expert but I've been told that.

Apparently 40 or so states think that they serve a practical purpose and thus have a law on the books. But for someone's opinion:

The foremost reason for front license plates is to assist law enforcement and residents in identifying vehicles that may have been involved in a crime. A secondary reason is to ensure that motorists pay the required registration fees to the state, which allow vehicles to be legally operated on the state roadways.

Officers on routine patrol constantly monitor vehicles that approach them, to determine if the vehicles have front license plates, indicating probable compliance with state registration requirements. A vast majority of patrol officers’ quick visual checks for registration compliance will be lost.

The Journal Times Online > Opinion > Commentary: Police departments depend on license plates, registration stickers

Another reason...

I hate front license plates. But...many many hit and runs result in the front plate being left at the scene. Even in the worst cases when there are injuries or fatalities, it's the license plate left at the scene of the crash that can lead to the case being solved. But obviously it's usually just a regular hit and run, the person takes off and the victim has no time to gather any info other than "a dark truck hit me". So in a city of half a million people that does no good. But, often the license plate is right there on the ground. That'd make me glad if someone hit my vette!!

They serve a purpose.

Lived in Ankeny for 12 years, 10 of those with illegal tinting on my windows. Heck I had limousine glass tinting on the back. I have pulled up right next to police at stoplights at least 100 times. Never been pulled over.

I got pulled over once in Ankeny, and it was right in front of my house while my neighbors were outside. He let me off with a warning, and said, pulling you over here is way worse than a ticket. He was polite and professional, but of course so was I.

Now Boone cops! They are a joke, I got pulled over on new 30 because for some stupid reason they changed the speed limit to 45 and did not put any signs up!!!

I don't live there, but drive through occasionally on 30. The new signs and limits have been there for several months.

AAA lobied for them to put signs up warning people... It's REALLY bad, rumor is there are kids hiding with radar guns and walkie talkies!

that's funny. For my trip back to Jacksonville, I was told to take I-75 to I-10 instead. I did.

I haven't had a front license plate on my truck since I moved to Texas in 2002. Haven't gotten pulled over yet for that. When I have gotten pulled over for other things (rolling through a stop sign), they haven't said a thing about it. I just found a study from the 1990s that said Texas could save $15M over 5 years by going to a rear license plate only law.

Just because states have the law on the books doesn't mean the law serves a purpose. You know that!

The other information you provided is useful, but I'm not sure it outweighs the cost savings to the state (and ultimately the taxpayers) of not requiring a front license plate.

tinted windows in an elementary school area seems fishy to me....jk...or am I?

Anyway, if you broke the law, you shouldn't complain about being caught.

Dude, give it a rest. Nobody agrees with you and your internet rhetoric is not going to convince people otherwise.
Yeah, nobody agrees with me, not one, you're so right. How would I live without you to guide me? I suggest venturing out of cyclonefanatic on occasion LeShmuck.

Yeah I was coming from a back road inside of boone out of town. So I got on 30 and figured it was 55, when it was in fact 45. I told the cop that, he did not care. So I guess Redeckers has lost a long time customer, because I will never go back to Boone. Not that I am going to really miss that crap shack of a town.

Yeah, requiring a license plate on the front of your car = not kissing a woman in public with a moustache. You're baby-like wailing is acting as if Iowa is the only state that requires the front plate - when in fact that states that do not issue a front plate are in the vast minority. Guess 40 or so states have a "worthless" law on the books. If 40 or so states issue the front plate, maybe it DOES have some practical purpose...
You sir still miss the point, the point is that these laws have minimal value. Methcatine as its called has far more problems to worry about but far be it for me to question the law, If youll forgive me Ill blend right back in with the other sheeple.

And you're missing the point that it's not all about you and what you want. To you it has minimal value. To the police and to the state it may have great value. Personally I couldn't care less if Iowa decided to do away with them tomorrow - I'd remove it and not think twice. But until then I'm going to assume that it serves some intrinsic value to law enforcement, and until the law changes I'm not going to ***** about having to have one on the front of my car (besides, it's more Cyclone flair that I get to display).

Both are state laws and just about anyone that lives in the state knows it - you're not allowed to tint the front windows and you must have a license plate on the front of the car. Anyone breaking these is just begging for a ticket, and if you got one you deserve it.

I am thankful for this law. In Jamica they tint darker (you might see the shadow of the person) and tint all of their windows! (In most cars it seemed) It makes me feel better for our policemen that they can see better into the window.

Not to mention the rash of kiddnaping and killing that was going on in Jamaica...it's too hard to see into the cars......

Wow! Holding a grudge against an entire town and an innocent business in that town just because you got a ticket for speeding?
