Um - yeah - it's the law...

And unless you plan on trading your vehicle in the southern US (where most of the states that don't require a front plate are), I highly doubt that the dealer drilling two holes into the front bumper of your vehicle is really affecting the resale value of your vehicle anyway...

+1, who is going to know- the plate will always be there.

Tint is one thing we can agree on, but if you think I want to drill holes in my 25,000 dollar vehicle and make it look ****** just so I can hang an unnecessary plat from the front is insane. Ill support the tint laws all day long, but the front license plate laws are crazy. Do they really expect us to **** up our cars that dont have license plate brackets on the front? Or do they just want another reason to sap as much money out of the people they're supposed to be looking out for?
Unfortunately yeah. It would be a great law to get thrown out. It seems like it's mostly left alone in Iowa, but you are giving the police a free pass to pull you over.

There are quite a few vehicles where you certainly would affect your Iowa resale value. Go over to Karl in Ankeny and I guarantee you will find at least a dozen new and used cars without front plate brackets.

Who said anything about a dealer doing it? Im not paying the stealership for anything of that nature. And YES, drilling holes in your car does in fact affect resale value.

I have 2 friends that are WDM cops and can't wait to go on a ride along! 1 told me they get a lot of crap for pulling people over (doing their job!), but they let off more than anyone realizes.

Then don't resell your vehicle in any state that doesn't require a front license plate (and I guarantee you are not ruining the resale of said vehicle by putting a license plate on it)...

I found out another way you can get pulled over and get ticketed. If you have a license plate cover on your car that covers the county on the plate. I got that from the State patrol coming home from a football game.

So what is worse, it affecting your resale value by very little or a bunch of tickets and time wasted for being pulled over constantly, because you didn't want to hurt your resale value.

The law in not going to be changed just because some people think it's a eye sore. So are turn signals.

I have no intent to resell it since I just purchased it but fact of the matter is, Im not crazy about drilling holes in my car for a plat that has no practical purpose. But since "It's the law!", Just how many of these: Dumb Laws in Iowa. Crazy Iowa Laws. We have weird laws, strange laws, and just plain crazy laws! do you agree with? Better shave that mustache before you kiss any women in public or fear the wrath of the mighty government!

Your guarantees aren't worth much. I traded a car a month ago in Iowa and it was a factor. I knew it would cost me when I put the front plate on; the dealership knew better than to do it on that type of car. It was my DD so I did it anyway.

It would be a factor in every single state for some cars. For example put a front plate on a C6 Corvette and you just dropped the value of that car by the price of a front bumper and a paint job. No one private sale or dealership trade will think it's ok. Most Vette people just wouldn't buy the car because of it or factor that in and reduce resale.

Dude, give it a rest. Nobody agrees with you and your internet rhetoric is not going to convince people otherwise.

I have only had a couple of incidents where a police officer has been "emphatic" with me.

The first was my fault. I was young and got pulled over for running a red light. I wasn't wearing my seatbelt, so I thought to avoid a ticket, I would just get out of my car when I stopped. Not a smart move. That's a good way to get a gun drawn on you. Suffice to say the officer explained why it was not a good idea, and I will never do it again. Didn't get the seatbelt ticket, though.

Another time happened just about a year ago in Florida. I was driving down a little county road, and I entered a town where the speed limit dipped from 55 to 45. I was slowing down, but the officer got me going 53 in a 45. I was maybe 50 yards past the speed limit change sign. I was not rude to him at all, but he started by asking me "Why are you in such a hurry?" I told him I wasn't in a hurry, but that I was just slowing down to the speed limit in town. I explained that I was not from the area, and that I didn't know the road at all. I think I said I was sorry about 6 times. He immediately started getting ticked off at me, and was like "Oh, I can tell you're from out of town." I was in a rental car, and when I told him that my proof of insurance was in my briefcase in the back seat, and that I would need to get out of the car to get it, he told me that he ought to "run me in" for wasting his time. Finally he let me get out of the car, and get him the proof of insurance. He ended up writing me a ticket for speeding. When I finally got to my destination in Gainesville, I mentioned the incident to some people that I was meeting with, and they all laughed. I guess this particular town has pretty well known speed trap, and they get people all the time. nearly everyone that I talked to about it had also received a ticket in the same place.

If you are driving a new Vette it would be cheaper to get the tickets. It's extremely unlikely you could get enough to make it cost what a new bumper would.

Most of my cars get front plates, but I have certainly had cars where I wouldn't put a front plate on. But, I can also say I was never stopped for not having a front plate; on a car that shouldn't have one. If you are obeying the law most police officers aren't out looking to pull you over for no front plate.

Yeah, requiring a license plate on the front of your car = not kissing a woman in public with a moustache. You're baby-like wailing is acting as if Iowa is the only state that requires the front plate - when in fact that states that do not issue a front plate are in the vast minority. Guess 40 or so states have a "worthless" law on the books. If 40 or so states issue the front plate, maybe it DOES have some practical purpose...

You got any hard, provable numbers to back up your assertion? By what dollar figure did two little holes affect the resale value, and I want Kelly Blue Book-like numbers, not your "well, it affected it by $X because I said so." Until you do, your words on the issue are worthless...

Like I said, I want hard, provable numbers. Exactly by how much is drilling two holes to put a license plate frame on a Corvette going to kill the value? Until you provide a hard number, your assertion is worthless.

What is that practical purpose? Does the purpose outweigh the costs of producing the plates?
