I think you making a mountain out of a mole hill $30 for a loaded chicago style pizza isnt bad whereever you are.

Besides who gets just a cheese pizza's

You don't think $31 is bad for a specialty chicago style pizza? I think it's bad considering I can get one for cheaper than that in Downtown Chicago.

My point is that there are so many pizza option in Ames. With the Economy all slow, you think people are looking to spend $31 for pizza no matter how good it is?

Even if $31 isn't a big deal, it's still a matter of principle. Don't charge me more for the imitation than the real thing.

Exactly, it takes alot more "stuff" and longer too cook and prepare. Not to mention it will fill you up a whole lot more...

I am not complaining about the price alone. I am complaining about the price in comparison with the authentic product. I know Chicago style pizza is going to be more expensive than regular.

But when Chicago Style Pizza in Ames is more expensive than Chicago, then there is a problem.

One $31 Chicago Style Pizza is the same as 2 regular Pizzas...

Why can't chicago-style pizza made in Ames be as good or better than chicago-style pizza made in Chicago?

That's like saying you can only find good French style cuisine in France.

I don't understand why you are being so negative. Do you work for Jeff's or something? You haven't even been to the new place. Why don't you go try what they have to offer first, then if you still want to whine, I'm sure this thread will still be here.

Never been to Jeff's or blackmarket but now I have more of an urge to visit blackmarket then jeff's.

If someone lives in Ames and wants Chicago style Pizza then once you figure in the price of traveling to Chicago, it doesn't look so bad. It really is an apples and oranges comparison. There is much more competition for Chicago style pizza in Chicago which drives the prices down. When you are the only guy in town that serves that style you will charge a little more. I guess I never understand why people complain about getting a new option they didn't have before, if you live in the Ames area and like Chicago style pizza then I'm willing to bet the price doesn't seem bad at all.

Actually, Jeff's is fantastic. They have a great menu, and I have never had a bad experience with them. BlackMarket is different than Jeff's. Jeff's is totally going for the college crowd. They have really good specials, and they are located in campustown. I would say that Blackmarket is a little more in line with Great Plains. They appear to be catering to full time Ames residents, rather than students.

Do you work for Black Market pizza? Why are you getting so offended? This is a message board right???

On the topic, I can tell you that this business just doesn't get it and it's sad to see when there is so much potential.

Yes, there are many pizza options in Ames. There just aren't very many good ones.

I'm not offended at all. I'm just curious as to why you have such negative things to say about the place, despite the fact that you've never been there. It makes you seem like you have other motives. Maybe you don't, and if that's the case, then I apologize, but you seem to be awfully critical, and I can't figure out why. I thought maybe you worked for the competition.

And yes, this is a message board. You are totally allowed to have an opinion. But, if your opinion is based upon nothing but conjecture you can't expect to not be called out on it. Go there. See for yourself. Then your opinion will actually be based on something. until then, it's pretty much hot air.

Quality doesn't matter

There isn't a good store in Ames, yet Walmart does well.

There is limited good chinese food, yet Golden Wok does well.

Do you want me to keep going?

I've got bigger motives in life than to bring down a pizza place in Ames.

I've been saying all along, I will go there and try it. I can just tell you that they don't get it.

You're right. I forgot all about your book "Mplscyclone's Guide to Running a Pizza Business"

How many weeks was that on the Best Seller's list? Tom Clancy, eat your heart out.

So I went to the Black Market Pizza website and saw that they do make Chicago Deep Dish the correct way which is good.

Here are my thoughts:

I also will say that it def. looks like you are paying the Sommerset tax at that place too. $23 for a Large Cheese Chicago Deep Dish for example.

I think I pay $18 or so at Felix and Oscars in Des Moines, and in downtown chicago you can get a Large Cheese for between $17 and $24 in downtown Chicago, it really make me wonder a little.

I will go and check them out for sure, but it seems to be overpriced on the Deep Dish front.

On the regular pizza front I'll compare the medium size

Jeff's Pizza Shop: Specialty Pizza for $16. On Monday's you can get two of them for the price of one (perfect for Monday Night Football). That's 28 inches of pizza for $16!

Great Plains: I get a large specialty for about $18

Black Market: $15-$19.5 for specialty.

I guess with normal pizzas it's about what Great Plains is at.

I will try it out, but I don't see how a place that is priced similar to Downtown Chicago on Chicago Pizzas, and priced relative to the more expensive place on normal pizzas will do all that well in Ames, IA. Especially since it's in a location that many do not notice. I have a friend that lives in Sommerset VERY close to Black Market and he had no idea it was opening...

To me, you gotta have good deals to build a customer base. Jeffs has good deals which is why I always order them now. Great Plains doesn't, but it's so established, and I only eat there a few times a year. Actually, Great Plains has a pretty good lunch special with pizza by the slice. I think you can buy 2 very filling slices for $5 or so.

I will try it as did many others. I just think the pressure is really on to wow everyone that comes in, because they just aren't putting themselves at a level in which one would be a regular. They are more at that level in which it would be an "every once in a while" place, much like Great Plains is to many.

you must have a lot of time on your hands.

when I want a pizza...I just get it whatever the cost as long as it is good.

I'm not sure what they don't get. You either feel that there is no market for higher quality/Chicago style pizza in Ames or are speaking in broader terms that in the current economy price is the only differentiating factor for businesses. I don't have a dog in the fight, but in my opinion their prices and product seem in line with the market share they are trying to obtain.

You must work for one of the big 3 auto makers I guess.

Quality doesn't matter to students in Ames, but I guarantee it does to the other 25,000 residents. Some of us have broadened our horizons past Pizza Pit, Home Team, etc.
