I don't even really use the "For You" tab.

I stick to the "Following" so I can see the content that I want to see by the people I want to see it by.

The "For You" tab can get a little off the rails if you start clicking on others profiles and it ends up sort of changing the algorithm. But even for me, it's more so just sports news under that tab.

I think the problem is however I used it for 10ish years was absolutely no big deal, if it was suggesting stuff I had no issue and the suggestions seemed in the ballpark of what I was looking at, sports if I was reading up on sports news etc. Then overnight it's just spamming me with stuff that's very often exactly the opposite of what I want to see and stuff I think is borderline criminal. I'm sure I could've figured it out but it just seemed like a really ugly thing so why reward that sudden change? It wasn't benign happy stuff and it usually had absolutely nothing to do with the other topics I was trying to follow.

Threads is the first alternate I've seen that has seemed like a viable alternate and mostly because I've seen most sports writers I follow make one and post about it.

All other alternatives feel very.... exclusionary. Trying to pick and choose the types of posters they want which will then in turn limit how successful they can be and never have them become a sustainable option/pretty silent.

I will say this was the first time I actually thought Twitter might be in trouble if limiting views and requiring logins (doesn't Facebook and Instagram already do that though?) was permanent. To me though, it felt like it was just very public troubleshooting.

I wont touch anything meta related so those are off the table. Twitter and Reddit are only used from webpages not apps. Probably stop using them soon. So that leaves me down to CF and discord.

I need a Discord how-to for dummies.

There are a few I am REALLY interested in but I feel like I must be missing out on how the whole thing is used.

Yeah mine got pretty questionable it was like bum fights and like political commentators who I've never expressed any interest towards. Felt very much like flavor of the month stuff got amplified to a ridiculous degree and then for a while it was stuff that was 4 or 5 days old.

CF, Twitter and Facebook are my only social media, and Facebook is only grudgingly as I have a business account tied to it and for keeping up with distant friends and relatives. I really don't see the need to add more. If anything, I will narrow my options down unless something revolutionary comes into being (and it would not be anything from Meta).

i don't get why everyone thinks twitter is so bad or going to go somewhere lol.

twitter is the best for up to the minute news
I think the rate limiting experiment really kicked people into high gear as far as searching for replacements. The other changes thus far didn't really prevent most users from interacting with Twitter as they did previously. (Like you said, I just use the "Following" tab instead of the "For You" tab, for instance.) But suddenly, if you follow a lot of people or use Twitter heavily during live events, it seemed that you were going to have to pay to keep using it in the same way you used to.

Twitter is great. Always has been. Just have to follow the right people and know how to use it. I see zero change since Musk took over. Now if he limits views, he’s going to kill it.

Some others as mentioned are Discord and Substack notes. Some websites have vibrant comment sections that are quasi-forums. I liked Twitter cuz I could do chronological. WHYYYYYYYYYYYY do people not do that?

Why would anyone willingly subscribe to the theory that Facebook, a vampire company, should dictate to you what YOU can see?

Threads is "growing fast" but it's benefiting from using Instagram profiles, importing followers, and a VERY easy sign up process. Kinda cheating. PLUS!!!!! Look at this list of permissions that you're required to approve if you use Threads

Come on!

Also - as mentioned, can't stop using/delete Threads unless you also delete Instagram. That's extortion. That's a nice Instagram you've got there. Shame if anything happened to it.

But that was only going to be temporary.. at least I thought it was.

I'll read tweets if they're posted here or reddit or whatever, but I can imagine a world where I'd want to just go browse Twitter or any other social media. I'll go to specific subreddits I'm interested in, golf, formula 1, gaming, etc., and here, and that's about it.

Decent amount of people I was following have either deleted or stopped tweeting. That's a big change. I've stopped, so I have deprived hundreds of people of my spectacular insights. Big loss for humanity. /s

I already know a lot of people deleting their health apps, which could be helpful for their health if they had privacy assurances

I don’t get the anti Meta views from some people. Like I’m not a big fan of some stuff they do either but they seem to be the best out there right now. Facebook isn’t near as bad as people act like as long as you don’t read the comments of news stories. Instagram isn’t my thing but is ok. Once it gets going I think Threads will kill Twitter. People have been looking for an off-ramp and this appears to be it. Not that it won’t have its own problems.

It was, but I think it shows that Elon is increasingly willing to make those kinds of changes that push users towards paying for functionality that was previously built-in. For instance, a related change is that the platform TweetDeck, which can be used to manage multiple accounts or to organize lists of people you follow (if you follow a lot of people), also got an update over the weekend that makes it less usable, plus it will be put behind a paywall at the end of the month.
