Iowa City Pedestrian hit by car

Getting around Iowa City is like the wild west, almost anything goes, whether driving, walking, or riding a bike, people all around doing foolish stuff.

As an example, even if you as a pedestrian have the light (the right of way) to cross, cars turning into that crosswalk might be aggressive and expect you to stop. So if you didn't claim your right of way, by outwardly and deliberately continuing to walk, they might turn directly in front of you, forcing you to stop-- like this is all some kind of negotiation.

I walked into the crosswalk like that, yet was aware that they saw me--which they always did, they knew perfectly well you were there. But I was always prepared to stop or jump out of the way if need be.

I knew that about Virginia Slims.

Didn't everyone who became a serious smoker back in the day go from Marlboro Greens to Reds and then to Lights?
After you developed the smokers hack most addicts tried to get healthy by smoking Vantage, Marlboro lights etc. What an absolutely horrible habit.

People should read what they say at the Reddit link and maybe look at Google Maps. If what they say there is accurate, I have a pretty good idea what happened.

It is perhaps a lot more unusual than the hypotheticals people are talking about here.

I am very familiar with that area, from running--that entire area north of Melrose all the way to Coralville (which includes the UI Cross Country track).

That intersection mentioned is not at all a major intersection. Walking or running on the sidewalk beside it, for a long time I thought it was a private drive, not knowing that it would open up and take you to all that new development. There is just a stop sign there I believe. And that area is all pretty hilly, so from the sidewalk you can see it go up the hill to the north, but not see what else is up there unless you went there. Just west of that intersection, you can see a nearby sidewalk that takes pedestrians to essentially the same place, independent of the road intersection.

Instead of a private drive, a dead end, it opens up to a huge area, all with very little traffic and a good place to walk or run.

I believe Camp Cardinal Drive to the west, which is four lane now, used to be a gravel road. And Camp Cardinal sometime in the past used to be operational.

If you look to the east on Melrose in Google Maps, you can see a big intersection on Hawkeye Park Rd to the north, and to the south, a road that goes to West High. You can see all the stoplights there. It appears to me there is just a single stop sign at the intersection in question.

Why did the car in the right lane wave the pedestrian across? I don't think there is a stop sign there. Did they have to stop? Were they turning? Did they have their turn signal on?

It seems the pedestrian in the set of facts on Reddit should have definitely been on the lookout for more traffic.

But the same might be said for the driver in the left lane. Why was the car in the right lane stopped? Didn't they see it? That time of day it wasn't dark, but maybe driving into the sun was an issue?

For sure. That bugs the **** out of me. There's zero reason to walk in the street with a sidewalk right there, other than to annoy drivers.

I used to run on side streets vs using the sidewalk. Many of the driveways were blind or tight angles so it helped me see drivers/cars better and they could see me.

If it got too tight vs. oncoming cars I'd jump on the sidewalk for a bit.

These were in super low key/slower traffic areas.

I actually drove by right after the accident happened. The car was in the left Westbound lane of Melrose, West of the intersection of Alcorn Ct or whatever that is. Westbound Melrose was closed and traffic was being directed North on Alcorn. I have no idea what happened but the crosswalk is on the East side of that intersection. It could’ve just taken them that long to get stopped after it happened.

Seems really odd to not release the participants of the accident. That should be public information. Hiding it behind 'part of an ongoing investigation' seems off too, disclosing who was part of an accident shouldn't compromise that investigation.

Not trying to be a ****, but why would you release that info when the driver is a minor. Just a terrible situation regardless of the driver. Can’t imagine how bad I’d feel if it was my son driving.

I mean, there are accidents all the time on the news where the driver is a minor and their name is reported.

Really? There are dozens of accidents each day that aren’t on the news. I’m not trying to hide Jack’s involvement - just saying it doesnt need to be plastered everywhere just because of his dad.

Not ones that have serious injuries\fatalities, generally.

Seems more that its not being said because of his dad. Username does not check out.

Sorry I guess my bias is because I’m a dad. I would feel absolutely terrible if one of my boys did this and I know it’s something that could have easily happened to me when I was that age.

I get what you are saying, but if the kid of someone of McCaffery's stature gets in a fatal accident it's going to be news and people are going to talk about it. Better to get the facts out there rather than delay the inevitable and have a bunch of chatter on social media forming their own stories.
