I think that's still a baffling call, but a competent commentating crew would have clarified what the call was rather than whatever they were doing. I need to see the replay because I thought it was borderline behind the backboard, but definitely not clear enough to call it for that mid air.
JW and EH talked all game about how OSU was focused on taking away our outside shots. That is how we were able to get rolling with the inside dunks, etc. early. Then OSU figured out how to make those difficult too.
At the very least, Ward is far more disruptive defensively. It's also a plus to me that he seems to know he's not a scorer, when Rob sometimes gets a bit black-hole-ish down there.

My guess is the ref thought it hit the shot clock but it didn’t. I hate that crew. They are incompetent.
