Not exactly sure.
I feel this. Part of the reason we are one and done. We can't afford more than that, and we both have good jobs. I don't know how people do it.
I honestly changed jobs to cover a bunch. Wife is a teacher and she would struggle at times to get days off, I was in the Twin Cities a decent amount for work and a couple times had a kid in car seat beside me when I was fixing a machine at a factory (one caught fire that I had to bring back to life) and nobody else could do it during my days off, so I went self-employed and did quite a bit of work at night to cut day care costs. My MIL watched the kids but we paid what the local facility charged, but was able to save by not having to pay during the summer or Thursdays which she took off to coffee with her friends and other days that I could just watch them. So we ended up paying for probably 7 months out of the year, (they would also take 1 month vacays during March). My mom would help in pinches also.

I get tons of email offers to make some easy cash. All I have to do is deposit a check that gets mailed to me from some random person and then immediately buy a bunch of GooglePlay cards with most of that cash. Then I take a picture of the codes and send them to a special phone number and I get to keep the rest of the money in my account. Easy money!

No kids but I've thought about something like Costco or similar just to pad things a bit.

They pay decent and many of the workers at the one I go to have been there since I started so they must have decent employee satisfaction.

Imo whatevr it is should be seemless/easy. I had a friend who was a teacher and worked at an ice cream shop for a summer and it was a super toxic work environment somehow.

Because she is not a certified teacher (full-time substitute) she pretty much doesn't get any paid leave. She will get the summer off and will start back in the fall.
So she sounds to be paid less than full time (probably because she isn't certified) and the benefits are that great..........In all honesty, what started creeping up in my mind during this whole thread is, maybe she can change jobs. Do you know a couple couples that have young kids that will need daycare also? If she can start a mini day care (if she only watches a couple more than your own I don't think she needs to be licensed) she could probably end up in better shape than she is now.

I know it might not be for everybody but are you good with rules of any sport? Refereeing basketball, soccer, football, etc… just doing it for younger ages like K-5th grade if you do like 3-4 games a weekend can net you about $100-$150

Had a buddy who taught at a local Middle school but worked weekend night shifts at Budweiser for supplemental income and he got free beer!! Supposedly he was close to doubling his teacher salary. He quit when he got a job at the HS teaching and coaching.

Also, look at your expenses really closely. Its obviously much more applicable for some people that others, but that can be the easiest way to start with making the budget not so tight. As an example, if you are paying for some things for convenience that you could do yourself and you look at it like a part time job that you can work at home. The classic example is cooking more versus takeout or fast food (also coffee or picking up something on the way to work for breakfast, etc.). Another example is looking at your vehicles, is there any opportunity to replace one with something less expensive (the vehicle cost, but also things like insurance, maintenance and fuel cost, and registration).

Know someone who works at Costco in the clothes dept. It's her I'm a bored retiree job. She works every Sunday @ time and a half and apparently the pay is really, really good.

Slow pitch softball leagues are desperate for umpires too. Depending on where you're at you can pull $25-35 a game and two nights of four games throws at least a couple hundred bucks in your pocket every week.

I did a bunch of slow pitch and high school softball for years that we used to supplement income and have some 'fun' money.

I would highly recommend gig driving - doordash, uber eats, grubhub. I do this on occasions when weekends allow, and can make roughly $100 an evening. Its great for allowing me to work when i can and want to work.

PM me if you have any questions

To add to this, umping. In high school in the Omaha/CB area I pulled $45/game when there were 2 of us and $70/game when umping by myself for 10 to 12 year olds. Games never lasted more than 2 hours.

A lot of good ideas here. Will be thinking of you, we would not have been able to have three kids if it wasn't for my wife doing in-home day care for a couple of years and then family helping us. My parents watch the monsters one day, her mom does another day and then either pay for them to go somewhere one day or my wife's grandmother if she is available (she is "young" (75ish) and very active). My wife is a nurse now so she never works more than three weekdays.

If you have the space and she is willing an in-home daycare is a good way to give yourself "free" daycare and bring in a few kids to help with the income.

Also we have been focusing on what you can do but could your wife tutor? I know she doesn't have a teaching degree but as a full time sub I am sure she generally knows her stuff and I am sure has great connections with teachers/schools to get referrals.

If you are paying 1500-1700/month per kid in day care, the costs will decrease when they start school. Those are basically college costs (I had never really thought too hard about it, but it's almost making me shutter on how we survived the two kids in college year), so unless you have a 1,2, 3 year old, it may be best to find those weekend jobs to take care of the smaller timeframe.

Know guys who worked at pizza joints on weekends when they were just starting out, they could make decent money because you would be surprised how fast you become a shift manager if all you do is show up and do your job.

Tutoring is a great idea. Many times, its that one on one work that is helpful. I know a tutor, who I wouldn't say was a good tutor, but it was the kids putting in extra time that helped them out. Kids act different for parents than they do others, so that is why just any person helping them read, or do math problems helps them out.

With baby # 3 on the way, I was reviewing our budget recently our family budget is going to get extremely tight with two kids in daycare for the next couple of years. Any recommendations for any side jobs to help supplement income?
My brother buys bikes at yard sales and fixes them up and sales them. Quad Cities has an old motorcycle swap meet Labor day weekend. He sells old bikes there and makes his best money there.

Where do you live? I need help around my place time to time for things I cant do alone and my bride cant (OR WONT) help with. I am going to rebuild an old chicken coop and tear down an old corn crib here soon and burn it. Tired of paying taxes on it as dont use but for some storage. I pay for each project that day. or half at start and the other half at finish. I cant count on neighbor kids as all grown. Our circle helps each other but cant always. Sadly I cant count on HS school kids anymore. No one responds to my ad at local store or elevator. With my youngest at ISU, oldest married off in the city, and her husband working 12 hour days as it is, I need more help and they cant help recruit from HS anymore and they wont let me advertise on school grounds. I am not going to hang outside of school with a sign these days, that wouldn't look too good haha.

I had a BIL in CR who sold his plasma for years to make some extra cash.
