Typically hate Wittenmeyer and Kaplan but agree with this take - Even if the cubs are in the race at the break or over .500, they’re going to sell, sell, sell regardless

Offense has been surprisingly decent but the pitching has not. Of the Cubs 5 losses just 1 has been the offense as 4+ runs should win you most games with a good pitching staff.

5-4
6-2
6-5
9-6
6-5

It's early I know, hopefully like in other recent years once guys start settling into roles and regular innings the bullpen starts to click.

Wisdom is on a tear right now after whiffing everything early. 8 for 15 the last 5 games after going 1 for 21 to start the season. Still doubt he is consistent at the plate throughout the season but when he gets hot it is a fun time.

Suzuki so far looks like the real deal. Robertson and Thompson in the bullpen have been surprisingly good too. Thompson I wish they would stretch out more and give him a shot in the rotation but he's filling that long relief role well so far.

Rivas and Nico not in the lineup today after big games yesterday. WTF is Maddon making the lineup for Ross these days?

Its weird because both those guys historically rake against right handed pitching, so its not for like platooning reasons.

Those are 2 guys that should be getting regular AB especially after a big game as they are young team controlled players so should be putting them in situations they could develop and succeed. Have the DH now that Rivas can be when Schwindel is also in the lineup and Villar can play multiple positions that if Ross really wants him in there today someone else could sit. Rivas needs the AB worse than other guys do as they should be using the time Frazier is out to see what he can do. Curious what happens when Simmons is finally healthy and takes away some of Nicos AB too.

Full disclosure: I’m a Cardinal fan but the wife is a Cubs fan so I end up listening to/watching a decent amount of Cubs games.

Does anyone else in here think Pat Hughes’ talents are wasted when he is on tv or is it just me? I think he’s a fantastic announcer and definitely calls a great game on the radio, but obviously you don’t need to be as good to be on TV as you do in a medium where you need to paint a portrait of the game. Just curious to what actual Chicago fans think.

Looks like we are in for another "blah" season while we wait for prospects to develop in the minors. Some takeaways so far:

Biggest surprises:
- Not sure you can call Suzuki a surprise but he looks like he is the real deal. He's cooled off a bit lately but early results are he is a good player
- Happ continues to hit. Hope he can sustain it this time as he is known to be streaky
- Nico Hoerner looking good at SS so far. Not only with the bat but with the glove too. Hope he can stay healthy as doesn't sound like Simmons is anywhere close to playing yet
- The bullpen: 5 guys with ERA under 3.00 and 2 more under 4. Has been pretty god, Robertson hasn't given up a run yet as the closer and Keegan Thompson has been great as the long man. Wick and Effross have looked sharp too.

Disappointments:
- Starting pitching: Smyly is the only one with an ERA under 5 and the top 2 guys Hendricks and Stroman have had their struggles. The rotation was not deep to begin with so really need those 2 guys to step up if they want a shot at a .500 season.
- Schwindel - really thought this guy would be hitting better than .205 right now
- Madrigal - same here, thought he would be a guy hitting closer to .300 and gettin on base near the top of the lineup. Will give him a pass for now since he sat out all last season but he was the big piece in the Kimbrel trade and was expected to be a bigger part of this offense
- Offense in general - outside of Happ, Hoerner, and Suzuki there has not been much to be excited about. Rivas has looked good in a small sample size but Ross hasn't done a great job playing him everyday when he's been up. Wisdom is doing what he usually does. Hit dingers and strike out a lot and don't see that changing so just have to ride the hot and cold streaks.
- Contreras - crazy to think he was almost an afterthought when I was thinking of lists. He hasn't been horrible but hasn't been memorable either. For a guy in a contract year he will need to get hot eventually else just will be another guy the Cubs wind up moving at the deadline and winds up signing for less than expected with his next team.
