Looks like we are in for another "blah" season while we wait for prospects to develop in the minors. Some takeaways so far:
Biggest surprises:
- Not sure you can call Suzuki a surprise but he looks like he is the real deal. He's cooled off a bit lately but early results are he is a good player
- Happ continues to hit. Hope he can sustain it this time as he is known to be streaky
- Nico Hoerner looking good at SS so far. Not only with the bat but with the glove too. Hope he can stay healthy as doesn't sound like Simmons is anywhere close to playing yet
- The bullpen: 5 guys with ERA under 3.00 and 2 more under 4. Has been pretty god, Robertson hasn't given up a run yet as the closer and Keegan Thompson has been great as the long man. Wick and Effross have looked sharp too.
Disappointments:
- Starting pitching: Smyly is the only one with an ERA under 5 and the top 2 guys Hendricks and Stroman have had their struggles. The rotation was not deep to begin with so really need those 2 guys to step up if they want a shot at a .500 season.
- Schwindel - really thought this guy would be hitting better than .205 right now
- Madrigal - same here, thought he would be a guy hitting closer to .300 and gettin on base near the top of the lineup. Will give him a pass for now since he sat out all last season but he was the big piece in the Kimbrel trade and was expected to be a bigger part of this offense
- Offense in general - outside of Happ, Hoerner, and Suzuki there has not been much to be excited about. Rivas has looked good in a small sample size but Ross hasn't done a great job playing him everyday when he's been up. Wisdom is doing what he usually does. Hit dingers and strike out a lot and don't see that changing so just have to ride the hot and cold streaks.
- Contreras - crazy to think he was almost an afterthought when I was thinking of lists. He hasn't been horrible but hasn't been memorable either. For a guy in a contract year he will need to get hot eventually else just will be another guy the Cubs wind up moving at the deadline and winds up signing for less than expected with his next team.
