Hy-Vee vs Fareway - Sunday Commercials

Ha, I still call it Copp's but DH reminds me every time that it's now "Metro Market" whatever, it's Copp's.

We did go to the Hy-Vee when we first moved up here but then the longer drive + $$ didn't make sense when it had no other real draw.

Haven't tried out Aldi's yet, I presume it's similar to Fareway but don't actually know that. DH does 95% of the grocery shopping.

I went in an Aldi one time and that was enough. People who like it can't wait to tell you how great it is. They don't have any name brands, it's all their own stuff. It's weird. The prices are low and so is the class of most of the clientele. People hate when I say that.

Aldi's is more like a cleaner version of SavUmore if that was around Ames when you were there. I shop there a lot for my staples then Fareway for meat and veggies.

Online ordering has been a game changer for that though. We get all of our groceries through Walmart pick up and then certain odds and ends at HyVee or Fareway. We are at the point where we buy very little from HyVee.

I can never get EVERYTHING on my list at Aldi, but I can get some staples for a reasonable price -- eggs, milk, cheese, etc. Their breaded chicken is awesome and well-priced. I also like some of their snacks. I typically purchase 80 percent of our list at Fareway (online order, drive up) and the rest at Aldi (either through Instacart or a quick trip in and out, depending on my week). It really doesn't seem to take a whole lot of time.

Aldi does carry some name brands but I couldn’t care less about that, I just want quality products at lower prices which they provide. Plus they don’t charge me extra to have a high school kid bag and carry my groceries to the car and the checkers are the fastest around. We get some things at other stores that they don’t carry but Aldi is great for a lot of staples.

Years ago we liked their frozen burger patties better than any other store. Haven't spent much time in Aldi's recently because Fareway is much closer. Probably should give it another try for some things.

I heard from someone that the Waukee location does the most in revenue out of all the Hyvee locations (which could totally be wrong), but I've also noticed that they have things at the Waukee location that are a buck or two more expensive than other locations in the metro.

I asked a woman working in the wine and spirits section in the Urbandale HyVee why Barefoot wines were 7.99 and Fareway was always 4.99, and she said it was to have a higher-end store than Fareway. I shook my head.

It's all about the case level deals. Prior to Edeker, the Wine and Spirts managers had total purchasing control. Now they are watched like a hawk as far the volume purchases go. The other factor here is when is the fiscal year end and the end of Q2 for some of these wineries? The large wineries are almost all part of publicly traded companies so they have to show results. Some of these brands will drop their pants at the end of the fiscals in order to hit numbers. Some HyVees will take advantage of these deals but many aren't anymore because of how closely their inventory is watched.

And this is why spouse does the shopping. I think time plus gas isn't worth it but he does. So he can go to multiple stores BUT he does it while kids are at daycare or at least 1 goes along.

To me, it really depends on where the grocery stores are. When shopping in Ames, it is manageable to hit Sam's, Aldi, and Fareway since they are all within 5 minutes of each other, but I wouldn't drive across town to do that (e.g. 20-minute drive).

Yeah in Grimes Walmart, Aldi, HyVee, Kwik Star and Fareway are all within a minute of each other.

Yeah I see a guy with a gun out under a balloon tulip in floral, I am thinking an actual florist sounds better, even if it costs more

Who could have seen that coming?

There was a highly contentious Slack conversation in the corporate-wide channel when it was announced that they were doing this. Someone actually ended up walking out as a result of that conversation after getting pretty heated and saying some things they probably shouldn't have (though myself and many others agreed with them 100%). It was not a popular decision and made many start to really question their decision to continue working there.
