Yea, what's up the market grill thing? Or Wahlburgers? Was the old cafeteria-style court thing not profitable? We loved to go to Hy-Vee for the cafeteria-style restaurant, but the Market Grill change was a disaster. We went there once or twice with coupons, but even then, it wasn't worth making forever since they only had 1 or 2 servers for the whole place.

The thing to remember about that is that not every HyVee is in Iowa and they don’t just cater to Iowans that grew up with that. Trust me, they do their market research. I’ve also learned that in the grocery industry innovation is important, even if something fails it can still provide value. Money isn’t an issue for HyVee so they have about infinite chances to do new things, but don’t ever expect them to go backwards.

I went to one of the HyVee Wahlburgers once. I was not impressed and haven't been back since.

I think a lot of these bad business decisions are starting to catch up with them. I thought I heard they were doing really well during the pandemic due to not many eating out at restaurants. Apparently that wasn't enough to help them.

That change pissed off a lot of people and they lost a lot of regulars.

I'll drop my empty cans there, go through the liquor dept to see what is on sale, go to the meat and seafood dept to see what is on sale, and take my empty can tickets to get something at Starbucks. Repeat once every month.

Yikes is right! My gosh, not only do they lay off a bunch of employees, but they trash them on the way out!

I know a good chunk of the 19 people in IT they laid off and I specifically worked closely with some of the 9 people that he referred to in his video (which I have a copy of in it's entirety) as being "bad for the company". That remark was complete ********. The people I know who are part of that group are fantastic individuals whose only "crime" was that they spoke out against a lot of the nonsense that goes on there.

He also had an anecdote about 10 of those 19 people they laid off that, "don't even live in one of our 8 states. They live remotely somewhere".

So, I guess they're not people then?

Yikes at this article.

Yes, god forbid people who have degrees and careers in IT or marketing don't suddenly want to accept jobs that totally derail their career track. That is, apparently, "offensive" to him.
I suspect that that attitude carries through to how they see and treat their customers, which is why they're having to go after Fareway in their ads. Hard to change corporate culture.

I know one of their IT guys that got out about six months ago, so much happier. Good call on his part.

I would actually wager they probably have more waste now than they did before regarding the Deli. Back in the V's Kitchen Days, they were pretty creative in regards to using todays leftovers as tomorrows main ingredient for hot dishes or soups, etc.

Well and also in the article he talks about how they need to target breakfast\lunch more. But that was a market much better served by the old cafeteria-style restaurant where people could get in and out quickly. Their new format is probably actively keeping those people who would just want to grab a quick lunch away.

You should post or link to it if you can. I was able to see it but I'm not going to put anyone in jeopardy by attempting to acquire it.

I laughed when I heard the Fareway ad that they are closed on Sunday to allow the competition catch up.

I saw that Hy-Vee is also shutting down Aisles online locations (including the one I use). Seems like an add move when customers have been shifting towards online pickup and delivery since the pandemic started. Do they make less money from online shoppers compared to in-person shoppers?

Sundays are for grocery shopping, eating half of it, and then napping. Fareway can suck it. I'm an Aldi guy.
