I'm not sure you really need to, as the only relevant thing that's relevant in the first Witcher is they lean heavily into Geralt's amnesia, and, if you play it that way, how Geralt's and Triss' romance really goes into full gear. It deals very little with the Wild Hunt (only instances in the first act and the final boss fight) and it seems like everyone in the game knows you, but because of the amnesia you have no idea why - and they go very little into it. That, and the Scoiatel aren't necessarily the enemy - only if your choices lead them to be. Yennifer isn't even mentioned by name and is only even hinted at once or twice.

I'm not saying it's bad, it's actually quite good. It's just completely unnecessary to play when trying to understand what's going on in 2 and 3. I'd say 2 is probably much more important to 3 than 1 is to either of them. But if you're a fan of the series, then get it and play it. But I'll also agree with a lot of comments online - it really needs to be remastered. It probably looks good compared to a typical 2006 game, but compared to Witcher 2 and 3 the character models are awful. Triss looks so bad they remodeled her for 2 (which carried over to 3). At least they carried over Shani's character model over to 3.
That was why I was okay with jumpin in at 2, my buddies said I hadn't missed much although they all said I should play it if I want to. They piece everything together well enough in the dialogue for me to get the gist, also. So I didn't feel too lost. I love the dialogue and storylines of the games, it's all so well done. As most who have played them know. And that really is the only reason I'd go back and play the first one I think.

Based on your response I'd say that's reason enough to go back and play it. Like I've been saying, you won't feel like you've wasted your time, as long as you're not expecting to gain any new insights on the series.

I'm sure I will at some point. Probably when I see it pop up on my games in the store or something. But planning on finishin W3 then watching the series. We'll see how I'm feeling after that haha. Thanks for the insight though!

It's only $10 on Steam right now, but if you wait for one of those Steam specials you can get it for like $3.

I've been consuming all of the witcher novels via audiobook and the guy who does the audiobook readings does a phenomenal job. They are a lot of fun. Makes season 1 make just a ton more sense to me too.

Is the narrator heavily accented? I know the books are originally from Poland. I've had trouble following some other books in heavy British accents at work, and usually try to save them for road trips.

The books are excellent! The games are great as well. I am cautiously optimistic about this second season, but we will see what happens

The Witcher TV series was great and helped make the Pandemic a bit more bearable.

Season 2 starts on December 17th, but a month before that, The Wheel of Time series on Amazon starts up on November 19th. If you like the Witcher I’d definitely check it out.

The Wheel of Time trailer

But the real grandaddy kicks off September 2022 with the Lord of the Rings TV show.

This has to be the golden age of fantasy TV.

A little bit. He does great voices for all of the characters. I didn’t find it hard to follow at all but I listen to a crapload of audiobooks so I’m kind of used to it.

Wheel of time is a great series and the trailers look very promising.

I have no expectations for the Lord of the Rings show doesn't sound like it is based on anything Tolkien actually wrote just taking place is his world.

Oh, and I don’t know how I forgot HBOs, House of the Dragon releases on January 1st, 2022.

So that’s a solid 3 months of new high-end fantasy.

My hope is that they take notes from the Silmarillion and flesh out some of the stories in there. I’ve heard the production is crazy high quality and they’ve cast excellent actors.

Fingers crossed.

(sorry to derail this thread. The Witcher is awesome.)

I didn't realize that's coming so quickly. Going to have to be strategic with the streaming lineups. I was about to cancel HBO with Dune coming out. Maybe I'll just give it a couple month hiatus instead.

So far the rumors are they aren't. I hope those rumors are false.

I still have hope and I’ll still be watching. I’m going to give it some time, get into the characters and see where it goes. Gun to my head, I’d bet dollars to donuts it will be an all-time favorite. But I’m a optimistic nerd at heart.

When I saw that Jeff Bezos decided to become more involved with the production planning, requesting that the show has a “Game of Thrones” feel to it I pretty much gave up any hope for it. I guess at least my expectations will be low.
