Kind of wish the target thing could have been avoided for a couple of weeks.
Still nice to see.

Why do so many people have this mentality?? It’s prevalent among cyclone fans. I don’t want to be ranked cuz we might lose now. Jesus Christ people, if you aren’t ranked you are losing too many games….

The basketball team is already very good. Thank you, TJ and KG!

That being said...

Imagine where it would be if Xavier Foster used the golden opportunity and its given talents to the same way as #11. That is, if the team had one of the best young PGs and Cs in the game on it.

Too bad #10 didn't want to come along for the ride.

Who is Foster? **** him

Honestly I don't even know if I'd call Memphis an incredibly talented team after watching them. I'd call them an insanely long and athletic team. I didn't really even see their problem as figuring out how to play team offense. It looked to me like a roster full of guys that were extremely limited in terms of offensive skill.

I think this is something that if I was a basketball recruiting service I would try to address. Ranking a guy like Duren that high as a college recruit seems like a huge mistake. I absolutely don't see him being a great college player unless he stayed 3 years, which one way or the other probably isn't happening.

As far as college recruiting goes, bigs that are athletic but raw probably should not be ranked nearly as high as they are, as they are probably not going to have a big impact in the college game. By the time they put it together they are already going to be in the NBA or G-League.
I think Memphis has good talent, perhaps they were overrated, but I think they're just very poorly coached.

Memphis feels like a team that could thrive by turning a team over with their defense and then going on large demoralizing runs. There is definite talent there, but they aren't organized yet to go against a truly pesky defense. I'll be surprised if they don't end up with a decent seed in the tourney when all is said and done.

From our standpoint, TJ's ability to avoid those same demoralizing runs in the 2nd half has been remarkable. That will keep us in a lot of games if we can sustain it.

Heck, TJ's guys create those demoralizing runs.

Our ability to force turnovers reminds me of some really good KU teams.

I thought they were a poor ball handling and shooting team, but I'm only basing that on one game. But it looked to me like this team had some glaring fundamentals flaws that aren't going to be fixed by any coach in-season.

Some random thoughts:
  • When you defend like Iowa State does, it makes it very difficult for the other team to go on runs. An 8 point lead can seem like a 16 point lead to the opponent. Just ask Xavier and Memphis.
  • It's going to be fascinating to see how they do when they have to go to Creighton. That team is about as different from Memphis as a team could possibly be. Will also be our first true road game.
  • Both Xavier and Memphis were committed to man defense. I'm guessing we're gonna go back to seeing more zone defense. Hope we still attack the zone from inside out instead of just standing around the perimeter hoisting up 3's.

If you guys are bored head on over to other big 12 basketball forums. Nothing but praise and concern about how nasty we look. Most think our team is better than theirs at this point and none of them seem excited to play us. Most are more optimistic about ISU basketball than a lot of our own fans LOL

And to pile on, you just know the "couple weeks" part is so he doesn't have to hear from Iowa fans about the ranking or worry about losing to Iowa and falling out of the rankings.

More surprising is who thinks Memphis is a Top 25 team at all? What a shambles of an offense.

It's like the NBA draft - purely based on talent not on who plays well as a team or has proven results so far. I'd have them at 23-24 myself.
