The first offer went to Bryce Drew. He turned us down so we settled on Prohm.

Isn't tonight "Spring Forward to the Monday we find out if we are getting a new coach"?

Watching Illinois vs Iowa. Is it true that ISU interviewed Underwood and hired Prohm instead?

At the time there was a lot of talk that JP shied away from Underwood because he is the polar opposite from Hoiberg in personality and emphasis on toughness and defense. Would the returning players (Niang, Morris, Thomas, Naz, etc.) stick around or transfer.

Whereas Prohm is a lot like Hoiberg from a personality and style of play. I remember articles at the time mentioning that Prohm kept Hoiberg's offense instead of using what he did at Murray State. I doubt Underwood would have even considered that.

People have suggested he'd be the top choice for KU should Self move on after his contract runs out in 2022.

He's a K-State grad and assistant coach at K-State under Huggins and Martin. I would think K-State would fire Bruce Weber in a NY minute if they knew Underwood was on the market.

Prohm’s style is nothing like Hoiberg’s. Prohm was on the coattails of Murray St. former head coach then Hoiberg. He has been way over his head but has simply been in the right place at the right time. His true colors have shown for years. Prohm is NOT a fit for a program that can be awesome.

Hindsight is always 20/20. Do not disagree that Snyder was the much, much better coach and program builder. But as I remember it, Max would NOT have had the support of the fan base for hiring Snyder. A big topic back then was the home and home series with the Squacks (Iowa hosted the 1st two modern games), and ole Hayden Fry didn't want to continue the series; especially on a home and home basis and The ISU fanbase adamantly did; and Snyder was a Hayden guy. The fan base would have gone crazy if he hired Snyder and he advocated cancelling the game. The legislature, under pressure, got involved and told Iowa to continue the game. Damn squacks.
The fanbase back then for football was usually around Maybe 35K....and toward the last it was maybe 10K.....

Why do ISU fans need to LOSE TO IOWA EVERY YEAR?

I am waiting for your answer.

Hayden campaigned hard for Synder to get the Iowa State job. But the feeling was that Synder was just a water boy. I remember saying those words myself. Boy was I wrong.

Underwood is a good coach. He would have been smart enough to utilize the talent he had.

I remember Monte calling for more defense after the UConn loss.

Maybe those guys wanted/needed someone who's a little tougher.

It might not be the right time for TJ but how do you know he's "deficient in the X and O part"? I watched most of the UNLV game last night. There was nothing wrong with TJs game plan or coaching. He just had lesser players and they wore down. The guys he would count on to score weren't and that was the ball game.
I guess that’s fine, but his last two recruiting classes have been tops in the MWC. With roster turnover and COVID a bit of a pass is reasonable. But let’s not act like this is Fred in year 1.
Do you think you would be good with another coach with the best recruiting class in his conference for two years then just say, “they just don’t have the talent yet?”

While I tend to agree with your perspective that people overrate recruiting ties, Prohm's connections to the southeast proved to be a major flop and a horrible fit for Iowa State. Otz has been an ace recruiter in Wisconsin, where we've found some success, so I can understand why it counts in his favor.
Prohm’s ties to the south were a flop, so he shifted and recruited very well in the Midwest. So again, people’s major plus for TJ is recruiting ability and ties to areas that Prohm has done very well in. If he’s able to recruit better than Prohm, it probably won’t be by much. So then it comes down to turning that talent into a team.

Well, he's been in Vegas now, so maybe he grabs some of the talent coming out of there for a while?
