In Memoriam: Ames Business/Restaurants

A cooler that’s 101 degrees you say? I think there is a different name for that.

The way that is written is bad. They are probably referring to the danger zone for food handling. You either want food stored below 40 degrees or above 100. Not sure exact temps. In between is not good due to rapid bacteria growth during that range.

The danger zone is 40-140. When I worked in the hy vee kitchen, the food taken out of the hot case that could be reused was to be put in the freezer first so it would cool down below 40 as fast as possible. Hot food put in the fridge was found to be in the 'danger zone' for too long.

I know the place now, forget the name, where the original Hickory Park was, told the exterminators not to come back as he would take care of the cockroach problem himself as they charged too much. The guys food is actually pretty good but after hearing that, nope. I won't go back.

Kinda like Mongolian, been there once, and haven't been there since.

Grubsteak?

Also has anyone mentioned Gamers? I bought my copy of Secret of Evermore there when I was in college. A decent retro gaming shop in the early 2000s. Looks like it went belly in 2018.

I went to Gamers quite a bit when I was in school. Bought a lot of Nintendo 64 stuff there. Then would stop at the Quiznos next door. Gamers disappeared for awhile but now have 2 locations in Omaha and one in Lincoln. I think they do online sales too at gogamers.com.

It's been through several tenants since it was Benson Motors but the people who own the land now are tearing down the old building. Anyone know what's going in there?
