Well that seems like big news. I mean there is a reason they dominate the All-Sports rankings but one big one is that they had a team for just about every sport that few schools could afford.
Stanford has an endowment of $27 billion. They could easily afford these sports if they wanted to.

Part of me thinks this is a natural correction.

In my personal experience I had more elite academic, artistic and standardized testing achievement than I did as a wrestler, yet I easily had more college scholarship opportunities for wrestling. It didn't seem entirely right to me at the time and still doesn't.

I hope at least some of the lost athletic scholarship opportunities across the country can become academic or arts scholarships that have almost no administrative costs the way non-revenue sports do.

One thing I really hate about CFB coverage is the agendas. Mostly Big 10 and SEC homers badmouthing other conferences. [...]

This is why I would like to see another major player enter the college sports TV circus. The Big 12 needs a "partner" that is actively promoting the conference, instead of badmouthing it or passing out backhanded compliments. ESPN and FOX have made their beds...the Big 12 is going to be second or third fiddle at both of those networks. I think a single network could actively promote both the Big 12 and Pac-12 without having to promote one at the expense of the other.

The B12 and P12 both need multiple new entrants to live CFB production to optimize negotiating leverage. If CBS, NBC, Turner and the FAANGs are all not serious bidders on the new TV deals, the B12 and P12 are both royally hosed and the TV revenue gap between them and the SEC/B10 will get much larger.

I really don't give a flip about what the ESPN or Fox talking heads are saying about the B12. Fans from all conference ***** about what they're saying or not saying about their respective schools/conferences.

Not totally disagreeing, but endowment money is not liquid. It's paying for scholarships and salaries for certain faculty, etc.

Can't agree with this enough.

They need to rig it so USC or UCLA win the south and probably Oregon win the North. Better make sure they are all 0 or 1 loss teams going into the title game too. Can't have Utah winning the South.

I get it!!! Nebraska versus Oklahoma style. Duh.

And some of it is endowed for a specific purpose. BUT if they are earning 2% annually on that endowment, then 1) they should probably fire whoever is managing it, and 2) they have half a BILLION dollars to spend each year before touching the principal. Stanford, of all places, could keep the sports if they wanted to.

Fascinating piece from out west. Larry Scott might be the most overpaid person in all of sports.

https://www.oregonlive.com/sports/j...t-the-squeeze-on-conference-headquarters.html

Let's see---we have the Pac 12 in somewhat of a disarray, a Pac 12 Commissioner that is increasingly unliked and distrusted by his bosses and a Big 12 that might like to add some teams and has a Commissioner who has a solid background with the Pac 12 and is likely highly respected by those Pac 12 bosses. Could that lead to a merger of the two with Bowlsby as the Commissioner of the new Big Western 22??

Make no mistake:
#Stanford has unlimited resources but *chooses* not to use them

It could sell a parking space across the street at Town and Country Village to pay for one of those varsity teams.

And *chooses* not to
I don't have a problem with them cutting sports. They have a total right to spend their money where they choose. That said, I have a problem them whining about how difficult this was. It was a business decision, plain and simple.

Business decisions that cut people’s jobs are incredibly difficult for the people who make them.

So true ... sleepless nights, anxiety and tears as you know you are making decisions that will impact peoples lives for possibly years.

Substitute 'can be' for 'are' and I'd agree as more often than not, I believe they do not care and are playing that card for political reasons.

I’m a pretty unimportant guy who will likely never have to make the choice. But one of my lifelong friends who is a very analytical guy thought he was going to have to lay off a lot of people, and he was absolutely devastated and honestly he looked terrible.

Politics at Stanford are incredibly liberal and AD interacts with those coaches and athletes all the time. There is nothing political about this.
