Iowa continues to drop down the list of states with active infections from COVID-19, currently below where we would be expected to be when compared to our population.

Being a largely rural state isn't bad yall. Voluntary self quarantine will work better here than some other places.

Hopefully we can stick to the trend of "underperforming" in this metric.

Probably because we aren't testing, and we only have 400 tests available.

Let's not forget that the Air Force flew 50k test kits from Italy to Memphis on Monday or Tuesday. That's right earlier in the week there were 50k tests sitting at the hub of FedEx who is still flying a full schedule and can easily but thousands of kits in every state overnight.

The Ankeny HyVee was well stocked this morning, and employees were in nearly every aisle unloading pallets. I really had to suppress the urge to deck a lady with cart that was filled with nothing but packs of toilet paper and napkins. Did my best to tell any employees I interacted with/passed by 'thank you', I can't imagine how high their anxiety levels are with all of this.

Supposedly Reynolds was going to announce a 15-day shelter in place today but got cold feet before the press conference and backed off. That is why there seemed to be no real point to it - no new information. Several department heads were briefed about the lock down and shared with a few employees.
The 'shelter-in-place' order that happened in San Francisco is more or less what is already happening in Iowa anyway. Essential businesses (grocery, pharmacy, gas/convience stores, etc) remain open there still, and restaurants are still open for carry out/delivery.

There were rumors of a police enforced curfew being announced yesterday that I rolled my eyes at. There are too many logistics involved in something as insanely authoritarian as that to happen in under 24 hours.

Seems to me that a shelter in place rules biggest effect might be pushing more employees home/more employees to allow wfh. Plenty have done it already but clearly many haven't as well.

The whole "shelter in place" thing is kind of silly how it's become this buzz word. Gov. Cuomo went on a pretty good rant about it yesterday. It's a term started in the 50s with the nuclear scare and now is typically used in training for active shooters, tornado drills, earthquakes, etc. Basically it means exactly as it sounds, in an emergency situation find the closest safe spot for the situation and don't move until someone gives you the all clear. As you said, that is not what San Fran is doing. When someone presented them with what shelter in place really means the decision makers in San Fran said they meant a modified shelter in place. Ok... if you don't mean shelter in place then don't say that!

The way this medical director talks really bothers me.
Ha - me, too. After this press conference I kept thinking of what I would tell her as a public speaking coach, after having her listen to a recording of herself. She probably thinks she's being soothing and calm, like trying to put a baby to sleep. Does she even realize that she sighs sometimes like she wishes she was with smarter people, so she wouldn't have to repeat herself? Never mind, I know the answer.

Yeah NYC just went 100% wfh for non-essential employees. I think stating it like that is better.

When they start testing more people the positive tests are going to skyrocket and people will panic... yet in reality that just means the true death rate is substantially lower than currently being shared.

And what "true death rate" is acceptable on something like this? If we test everyone, and find the true death rate to be similar to the flu, can we go back normal living?

People are already freaking out about the increase in corona cases so far....how much of that is simply due to more testing?

Probably most of it. I think it's been here for awhile.
