It's a tough subject thats for sure. I remember back when we had our 7 and 9 win seasons. We had a very well coached defense. Skladany knew his X's and O's. As soon as the talent dropped, people blamed the coaching right away.

I think if we give Bolt the horses, he'll produce.

I won't fault our D TOO much for being horrible against the pass. I mean look at the conference we are playing in. 8 Big 12 teams are in the top 25 in Pass Efficiency, with Okie State being #2 in the nation. (FWIW, the Big 12 has the #2,3,4 and 5 pass efficiency Os in the nation). Only 2 teams in the conference have Pass Efficiency ratings lower than 35.

Comparing that stat to the other Big 12 teams, yeah we are the worst- but not by THAT much. Nebraska is 96. Missouri is 92. Baylor is 91. A&M is 84. K-State is 83. Texas is 80. Even the best team in the conference in that category is Oklahoma at 34.

I agree with this post. Our defense looks bad, but when the offenses in our division are powerhouses, our defensive stats would be down. Really, I think if we were in a different BCS league this year, we would have won a couple games.

It wouldn't be a stretch to have Pelton as D-coordinator. Hell, the guy only coached two of the best players in the NFL (Osi Umenyiora and DeMarcus Ware). Like I said, there is talk in the offices of Bolt possibly being reassigned and Pelton taking over the defense at least as co-defensive coordinator.

bolt has had some pretty good teams, but those good teams all had outstanding players, who would make it pretty rough to be a bad defense. it takes more than one, but he had players like demarcus ware and osi umenyiora, both of whom are pretty solid rocks upon which to build a defense. I want to know why a guy goes from clemson/auburn to lowly iowa state? chizik did for a better job opportunity, but i cant see where bolt is any better off for taking the job.

i dont think chizik would can bolt this early either, but the end of next year wouldnt surprise me, especially if they do not always see eye to eye.

The thing that concerns me the most about Bolt is that he doesn't seem to play to his personnel. It seems obvious to me that the strength of our defense is at corner. Why not play nickel as our base and maybe even some dime?

Bolt can coach and recruit and the players love him. If he goes anywhere it will be for health reasons. The guy is a stud. He has a push button whistle, awesome!

This is a little premature, for christ sakes Marty Fine got a few years before getting the axe and those teams were going to bowl games.

Mac left the cupboard so bare - there was nothing this staff could have done to compete at the level the Big 12 is at today. Next year the rest of the conference takes a step back and that will be the real measuring stick.

I know there will be some coaching changes in the off season. That is the rumor I am hearing.

Our DB's haven't exactly been tackling machines this year, and you want to take away a LB and add another DB to the mix?

(Note - Not saying our LB's are tackling great either, but slightly better than the DB's.)

I like our coaches, but we're a 2 win team with one of the easier schedules in the Big 12. Player changes have been made this season - we should expect a coaching change or two to be made.

Too early or right timing could be debatable - but it's Gene's team/program and if he feels a guy isn't getting it done - clearly he'll make a change.

I had McFarland at the top of that list a few weeks back and said without improvement, he should be on the hot seat. The offense has improved some recently and if they can sustain that (and get better), he should clearly stay - IMO.

We certainly do need more horses all over the defense.

However, our Defensive coaches have got to teach these guys where they should be in coverage better. We have guys running wide open through the middle of our secondary every game. We are mentally out of sync in coverage as well as slow. If they can't get the coverages figured out, maybe a few position changes are needed.

Firing assistants at this point would be a little Ron Prince-ish, but it's Chizik's show I guess. I'd be surprised.

I doubt we will see any major changes at the end of this year. Smaller coordinators maybe, but major coordinators will be around until the end of year 3. If we're not better, time for new help.

I think they can all coach. Recruiting will be the key. I don't know who the good recruiters of the group are and which ones struggle. I is a million dollar business and if someone isn't cutting the mustard in recruiting Chizek will let them go.

Funny, I think the exact opposite. It seems to me like they have done a decent job recruiting, but a horrible job coaching.

I agree with 22 100% here. I think RMac's stock is rising, Bolt's is falling faster than the price of crude oil.

Our defense is currently ranked 109 in the country and that's got to be bugging the heck out of him considering his background and reputation. McFarland's opened up the offense taking some heat off himself, but I'm wondering about Bolt's fate. Does he stay, go, or stay with Chizik being much more hands on. Yes the cupboard is bare on that side of the ball, but I'm not sure it accounts for us being that horrible. There are only 3 D-I teams worse than us in pass efficiency defense. Interesting that Washington is dead last.

I don't care who is in the secondary, if there isn't some sort of pass rush, there's going to be problems against any team with a decent QB, and in the Big 12, we have more than just decent QBs.

:no:Get off this heads gotta roll crap. If any of us got a job to turn around one of the worst companies in the country, me thinks we'd want/need more time than Chizik has had. It's not like he can walk in the door and effect changes immediately, it takes time, patience, and an informed understanding of the task ahead.
