I doubt Grill will ever be the shooter Matt was, but Grill is taller and much more athletic than Matt ever could be.
Matt Thomas is two inches taller than Grill is, but yes, Grill is much more athletic.

Grill will continue to get playing time. The more playing time he gets the more confidence he gets. Would love to see him

Maybe listed 2" taller, but I'd wager shoes off they are the same if not Grill a bit taller. Grill is certainly longer, which is what really counts.

Do you think this team is going better than 9-9 or 10-8 in conference? If not then this game was critical. Losing nine conference games on top of the 2 we have now gives us 11, which gives us very little wiggle room when we still have 2 more here, Auburn, Seton Hall, and Iowa. We're not making the tournament with 13 or 14 losses so the wiggle room we had is quickly dying after losing to Oregon State and Michigan

If they beat Alabama and the loser/Seton Hall or Oregon then this is still a massive success. Nixon is not a shooter but a grinder. If he takes over 10 shots a game that is game we simply won’t win. Defense is very solid for this point in the effective. Effective in “icing” the guard in pick n roll. Still need to see more from Conditt is pick n roll responsibilities. The first 4 minutes of the 2nd half is why we lost this game. Need to be better out of the locker room. We will get one of these wins. Team is playing really hard so they will get a break soon.

I mean we're splitting hairs here but Matt was definitely 6'5" and Grill is 6'3". I'd bet both were measured with their shoes on because that's usually how they do it. But yes Grill looks to be a bit longer and is definitely more of an all around better athlete.

Stephan F. Austin beats #1 ranked Duke
Evansville beats #1 ranked Kentucky
Favored Michigan beats unranked Iowa State.

(Some) CFers melt down and consider the season over.

Fair enough.

Exactly. I don't think he should be shooting as much, but to act like Grill should start ahead of him at this point is silly. I love Grill. I think he's going to be great. But Nixon isn't the reason the team lost these 2 games. He just isn't.

I do not mean to lay this all on Nixon's lap. We lost as a team. I do think it is reasonable to say, however, that he is pressing on offense and needs to concentrate on being that bulldog who does the little things instead, especially defending. So far, Nixon has only played into some of the reasonable concerns we had about him coming into this season about his iffy shooting, inefficiency on offense, and need to adjust to high-major ball.

If anybody, I lay this on our bench. We had a very good bench last year and a bad one two years ago. The bench today gave us little. That needs to change, but that bench is made up of four guys who are either freshmen or sophomores beginning their first season as rotation guys in high-major ball. But it has to be more productive going forward.

I am not calling for him to be benched now, but I think some of his minutes might need to drift in Grill (especially) and Jackson's directions. If he is still playing like this come Big 12 season, then we (1.) probably lost a few key games, so we are basically out of the running for March and (2.) might as well play the young guys at that point, because we have little to lose and might as well build for the future with those young guards.

This is the moment that this guy (and the woman in front of him) came to the Bahamas for. Sad.

People seem surprised that Nixon can't shoot and for the life of me I can't figure out why. Look at his stats from Colorado State - raw stats and advanced. At some point you are what you are. DeAndre Kane was a rare exception.

Before the season started I said he wasn't going to be a good shooter for us and that Prohm would let him fire away because he has tiny little balls and/or poor coaching feel. Each happening not shocking. ISU fans acting surprised not shocking. Not a good offensive guard, signed because he enhances Chicago connections. Cool.

Rabuk the gauntlet has been laid down. You better up your game.

Imagine 23 thinking he and this guy among many others don’t want Iowa State to lose so they can say **** like this

I think beating Alabama and avoiding the game for 7th place would be a positive. Just hope Alabama doesn’t beat NC

I highly doubt the guys taking those shots are absolutely clanking them in practice. Hell, there were 4 or 5 of them that were in and out of the rim, so a lot of the misses were actually good misses! The shots are good looks and for whatever reason, we haven't been making them. Prohm isn't going to tell Prentiss and Bolton that they need to stop shooting threes because that'd be idiotic. Now, does Prohm need to tell Prentiss that some of his shots were forced? Absolutely.

We have to keep doing what we're doing. Clean the little things up, especially on the defensive end. The shots will start to fall, because the percentages say they will. We're absolutely a better shooting team than we've seen.. We've got to just roll with the punches a bit here and try and figure things out.

Look, we've lost two games against two tournament teams that have both come down to the wire. We had opportunities in both games to win and have come up short. I trust that Steve and his staff will figure things out and put this team in the best opportunity to succeed now and later on down the road. Beat Alabama tomorrow and then let's go get Oregon / Seton Hall and feel good about ourselves coming back home.

There might be some practices when the are hitting but so far we have the two scrimmages and 5 games to show that they aren't good shooters. And for Nixon, we have his whole career to show he isn't a good shooter.

One good thing I will say --

Michigan was 57.7% from the field (!!!) but had 22 turnovers (!!!) to our 9.

A turnover is as good as a bricked shot. We bricked a lot of shots, but we did not waste many of our offensive possessions on turnovers, either.

We had 69 shots versus their 52 from the field (!!!).

If we keep ball-hawking like that and generating turnovers, then that goes a long way towards making up for our LeBricktastic shooting. Looking through the box score, that was the only reason we were remotely in that game.

We are getting there on defense faster than I thought.

The offense just needs to catch up. If it does, this is a very good team.

Yes and no on the defense thing, 57.7% says there is work to do on defense. I don't buy into the supposed 'randomness' of 3pt shooting. Late or missed rotations are going to have higher conversion rates.

A note on the shooting: I don't expect us to be a good shooting team this year, but I still don't see how it doesn't get somewhat better. Bolton is shooting 11% from three so far this season, last season he shot 36% from three. I think Nixon is the worst shooter of the guards, but even he shot 33% from three in his last year at CSU and is shooting 22% from range right now. I know it's tough to tell a team that has shot this bad to keep shooting when they're open, but I kind of feel like you have to.

Line was moved back this year, so there are no comparable stats to last year. But Michigan certainly didn't have any issue with the three.

Too lazy to do it myself, but does anyone have a quick reference to average 3 point shooting across all teams in 2019 compared to season stats for 2018?

Yes, but even if Nixon were hitting at his career percentage, he'd be better than what he currently is at. So obviously Prohm sees that and knows things will get better and shots will start to fall for him and Bolton. I do agree though that Nixon has to be able to look at the chart and realize that some of his shots were good and some were bad, and I guarantee you that Prohm is telling him the same thing.

I'm disappointed we lost today, but we did a lot of nice things and look to be improving in certain areas. The one area that hasn't improved yet has been the outside shooting. It's gotta come, it's going to come, and I hope all of us are able to look back later in the year and laugh about these poor performances.
