I would say 8 full seasons may have been fine. The pacing with these really long episodes has been really off. A lot of moments just feel forced and out of place. Varys's death for example deserved better. It felt like they checked a box and moved on. It should have been the big ending of an episode with a lot of buildup. Was he trying to poison Dany with his little bird? Seems like it, but it's not clear.

I think having seasons 7 and 8 be a full 10 hour long episodes would have fixed a lot of that. Honestly I could have done without a lot of the big battle stuff and more story development. I don't think it added much to the show but probably took a tremendous amount of the shows production effort. We didn't fall in love with the show because it was a big budget action war show.

Battle of the Blackwater, Hardhome, and the Battle of the Bastards dictated that unfortunately. There was no way we weren't getting hour-long battles for the Long Night and King's Landing. And people thought the Long Night should've gone longer. It's one of the reasons this season feels rushed. A third of the season is spent in battle, but they were two battles that had to be fought. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

That's quite the strawman.

Honestly, I am ready to see how the story ends. I don't need more. So far I have been entertained, and yeah this season and last were a little rushed, but ultimately I am getting what I want, and end to this game.

Same.

Since the show has to have an ending, there had to eventually be some pretty major confrontations to resolve things. Once those occurred, you really can't write the show the same as the first few seasons since the number of characters playing the game of thrones have either died or collaborated. I definitely preferred the writing from the first few seasons, but the intrigue and scheming from Varys and Littlefinger weren't going to be able to continue while still advancing the story.

Every ending was going to involve major players being eliminated from the story in some form while focusing on the remain contenders. More episodes would have been preferred, but I can't change that. I'm just enjoying what I get at this point, and I'll move on once it's over.

Count me in the camp where if I was a major actor in this series, I could make it work for another season or two then retire comfortably and never work another day in my life.

But, I suppose us simple folk don't understand that lifestyle.
