Lumber in DSM

Does anyone know a good spot to get dimensional surfaced hardwood boards in the Des Moines area outside of Menards? There are a ton of lumber companies in DSM but it’s tough to tell what they carry from their websites.

You'll pay for it but Woodsmith carries some sheets and some rough sawn lumber.

Depending on the day. Sometimes they have make good lumber and other days not so good. You all knew someone was going to break the ice.

Have you looked into Liberty Hardwoods in Ankeny? Don't know if that is what you are looking for, but it might be worth a shot.

What species are you looking for? I know it’s a little expensive, but I’ve had good results with the cellophane-wrapped dimensional lumber from Menard’s. Unwrap it and let it sit for a few days and I’ve never had any cupping or twist problems at all.

Woodsmith store in Clive is a great place to start if you want small quantities or are not sure what you want. You will pay a little extra but the quality is waaaaaayyyyyy better than menards. I don't have any experience with more direct sourcing from mills though.

I haven’t. It’s one of those thangs where it’s tough to discern whether these places mostly serve contractors and large quantities or if you can go in and just buy a handful of boards.

What species are you looking for? I know it’s a little expensive, but I’ve had good results with the cellophane-wrapped dimensional lumber from Menard’s. Unwrap it and let it sit for a few days and I’ve never had any cupping or twist problems at all.

Right now I’m looking for some hickory to use on a dresser and I need some white oak for some table tops. I’ve been using the stuff at menards and haven’t really had an issue either but most of what I build is out of red oak, poplar, aspen or veneered ply which they carry in store. They have a large selection with those but it’s pretty limited for hardwoods outside of the red oak and nothing but 1x’s in everything else.

I got some stuff for a project at Beisser in Grimes. I wasn't really looking for fine hardwood, more of a maple or poplar or things like that. Got both sheets and dimensional lumber. Pretty good variety, but I was mainly looking for 1x's.

But I was impressed by them. It was definitely a "big lumberyard" where you just drove around back to get the stuff. I was a small fish, but I didn't feel like I was a nuisance, though.

Woodsmith store would have a LOT better selection. And may be your best option, depending on what you want.
