Once again, it is my fault! I'm dragging Velo down to my layman's level Sorry.

But it is true that I get an almost instant headache when I sit near the floor. And I do miss the more golden tones on the old TV broadcasts. As for the balcony being darker in person, I don't think it is, except that it might seem darker because the floor is brighter.
Don't get me wrong, I'm no expert. But I had to learn a lot for that project.

As far as the headaches go, you should take a trick from Jack when going to the games.

Once upon a time I lived near the U of Illinois campus. Attended several games at what was once Assembly Hall. It had a very similiar lighting scheme as the present Hilton one, possibly w the seating areas darker. IMO
that was one of the loudest places I have ever attended a game and seemed, to me at least, to be a really tough place to play.
I dont think the changes at Hilton make much difference.

Fortunately, I'm not down there very often. More for gymnastics than basketball.

One thing I have noticed that when you watch the games on TV the arena looks a lot darker since the new LED lights went in. Hard to see how many people are there because after the first few rows in a given TV angle it gets noticeably darker. I've heard that the new LED lighting was installed with the intent of making the court/main floor the focus of attention. We pack Hilton nearly every game and it would be nice if that was on full display during a TV broadcast as that is something we should be proud of. Look at how many other games at arenas where it's noticeable how the place is barely half full sometimes and it shows up on TV too. We don't have that problem so not sure why we have to dim things down so much that it makes the background look dark on TV too.

It's not a huge issue for me but something I noticed once they put in the new lights. I love how the new lights allow us to do more pre-game and even in-game stuff with the lighting but the rest of the lighting throughout Hilton could be tweaked a little still.

jereseib paid you to post this didn't he?

First it was ties, now lighting, yet another angle of holding Prohm accountable for such a horrible run in ISU basketball history.

That diabolic bastard will stop at nothing to try and convince people Steve Prohm is simply Ken Trickey reincarnated. And that Fred Hoiberg was actually the love child of Adoph Rupp and John Wooden.

:)

Actually 67 might be dumber

The new lighting was done, as is pretty much everything else in college sports, primarily for TV (and the money it brings). As I understand it, ABC/ESPN prefers this kind of lighting scheme. The NBA arenas have done the same thing. In one of the previous threads about this topic, I posted some YouTube links of Lakers games in Staples over the years showing the effect of the lighting change.

A number of years ago, when the NBA moved from NBC to ABC, I remember reading some discussion about this, and the different technical approaches and philosophy taken by NBC and ABC regarding arena broadcasting, including lighting and how crowd noise is incorporated into the broadcast, because fans noticed the difference. The advent of HD and production costs were drivers.

The following is all personal preference and perception, but I much prefer the way NBC did it, as it gave me a much better "feeling" of being at the game. The current lighting, combined with how ABC/ESPN incorporates crowd noise, just seems sterile, and gives me an "outsider" vibe.

I've heard they're going to upgrade the lighting system again this summer to add some stuff that can do on court design type stuff in the future
That will likely be accomplished with some totally different fixtures (intelligent lights or lighting projectors). As you hinted, the existing system will likely not really change just be augmented. Intelligent lighting allows moving lights and use of gobos (what makes patterns in a projected pool of light) all of which can be programmed into a light show. I don't know how much of this is in place already since I haven't seen a pregame since the lights were added. The really interesting thing is the line between intelligent lights and video projectors is starting to get really blurred so some instruments can pretty near do it all.

The start of this thread is why the off season this year is going to be the worst. Just random threads of dumb.

Trying to reclaim his crown.

You guys joke around but this is reason why Hilton isnt as hostile a road environment anymore under Prohm. He's had so many losses now including getting blown out a couple times and losing to Milwaukee, that teams aren't intimidated anymore.

The crowd is also alot more apprehensive since we now have a history of losing in Hilton. It used to be nobody was coming and pushing us around and the crowd knew it, let alone losing to teams under .500 in conference like our last game.

You have no clue what you're talking about, or no memory of the years under McDermott...
