The people of Cedar Rapids know from 2008 that floods are real and can do real extreme damage. No one will be complaining if the flood protection measures put into place "overprotect".

The preparations for this flood will not make people underestimate future major flood threats.

Nobody from CR will be. Obviously people from other towns will.

holy **** people. i asked if they were overhyping this and said studies show overhyping leads to less action down the road. you know not all questions are bad simply because they are asked.

it's surprising to you that in the middle of a major flood event, in which the effort to protect the city seems to be working, that questions about "over-hyping" might not be taken as, well, timely?

Trust me. People in CR are more than happy to have this be overhyped. The sense of community, even if it ends up a bit overhyped, is pretty overwhelming. It's all good. It's not like this happens every 2-3 years.

I think if you drove downtown CR now - you would be able to tell if people are over-reacting. My friends got evacuated out of their condo and were told they might be able to return in a week.

I want to clarify that I am all for being over prepared. The rest of this flood up to 24 feet will show how accurate the inundation maps are.

Side note: I am disappointed that I found out about Quarter Barrel and Parlor City offering reduced price or free beer to sand baggers after I left downtown.
Inundation maps are a piece of cake. Predicting the flood levels is the hard part.

Are you that dense?

You didn't really ask "I see they are predicting high water - for your folks in CR - does it look like it will be true? Will things be as bad as they are predicting?" Instead you went on a streak of saying "32' in 08, 23' now, what's the big deal" and "things things are usually over-hyped" etc.

I still don't understand your point in all of this - what exactly is your point?

If you want to know whether it's been serious or not, come up river 75 miles from CR to my farm and see what we dealt with over the weekend. Probably looking at over $75,000 in lost crops on our farm, and we have it good compared to a lot of folks.

studies have shown repeated "overhyped" events cause the public to take future warnings less seriously.

I think it's just your expectations that have been changed. As soon as the words "not as bad as '08" or " not the record" are uttered people with no skin in the game are like, "this isn't that bad then". It's about protecting life and property, not YOUR life and property. You will know when you need to take the warnings seriously just like the people of CR knew they needed to take this "hype" seriously.

Well the warnings / preparations are FOR the people of Cedar Rapids. I couldn't care less what someone from out of town thinks about our city's response. Our community is protecting our homes and businesses and citizens.

Your question asked if he thought people were not taking this event seriously, and that is not what MTown was saying.

Yes, you corrected me. But my next statement was next time the river is expected to flood at 10'+ over flood stage, the people won't take it seriously because of this "over-hyped" event.
