TV Contracts are based on so much per team. Adding an additional member does not lower the per team share. The league needs to work on a Conference Network in order to increase revenue. Cincinatti helps in that regard. It is a decent TV market.

The options Iowa State had when the Big 12 almost disbanded were not that great. Soft Landing Spot and Very Marketable?? BS.

The ISU AD would be derelict in their duty if they didn't develop a plan for the next round of realignment. I believe they have.

If the Big 12 collapses, the Big Ten is hands down the best scenario, but there's no way Iowa is backing ISU's membership. We all got a sneak peek of what the ISU to the Big Ten movement looked like in 2010-2011. Iowa gave ISU no support in conference realignment. Many were actively lobbying against ISU's inclusion.

Because it's not in Iowa's best interest for ISU to be in the Big Ten. It's not in the Big Ten's interest for ISU to be in the Big Ten. It would be in Iowa's best interest if ISU were relegated to the MAC or AAC, a non-P5 conference, so Iowa could assume their "rightful" place as the only major athletics program in the state.

Iowa's a small state with a limited talent pool. Smaller than Minnesota, which has only one P5 university. Smaller than Wisconsin, which has only one P5 university. Iowa views ISU as an also-ran, a hindrance that spoils the Hawk's chances of competing for championships each year by diluting the talent the Hawkeye recruit and donations to their athletic department in the state. Iowa doesn't want ISU to compete in the P5, they want ISU to go away. There's no way the Hawks support ISU's membership in the Big Ten.

Yep, this sounds right.

Can't see this league taking Memphis, period. Bad academics. City school. Occasional sports. Boring town. And not contiguous either.

Fan of team from Manhattan, Kansas calls Memphis a "boring town"

So predictable from Ames.

I didn't call Memphis "boring"! I think Memphis would easily be a top 3 city in the Big 12 if you added them in with the other ten, behind Austin and right there with (and probably ahead of) Fort Worth. But call it "boring" all you want, Aggieville is all you ever need

Present plan includes the GOR given by Big 12 members. If those members leave the Conference retains their rights. The future plan would probably include remaining in the Big 12 with as many members left as possible and then get the best candidates possible to fill Conference slots. I am sure that Iowa State would try and get in the Big Ten if the Big 12 would break up. But doubt that we would be taken. No TV sets.

We do know that the options we had when the Big 12 was breaking up were not that great. We were members of the Forgotten Five. And we were planning on giving up whatever to keep the conference in play. Colorado was in a panic and that is why they bolted to the Pac 12. And probably wish they never would have left.

We would probably be in the same league as Cinci and UCONN.

You do understand that K-State is in the league, right?

And have you ever been to Memphis? FedEx was a long term client of mine. The town is boring. It has a jazz district. And barbecue. It's a hot, muggy, river town with a tier 2 university. 17k students. A commuter school. It adds nothing, period.

We all know the history.

Going forward the ISU AD (and the other forgotten 5 ADs) must plan and lobby for a landing spots if we lose OU and UT. I believe ISU (Pollard) has learned a valuable lesson and will act accordingly.

Relegation = death for the ISU AD. If it goes to P4 and we're not in it we're done.

There's a 'do nothing' case. Wait to see if the PAC fails and maybe pickup the Arizona schools. Or see if Clemson and FSU grow weary of being in a hoops' league.

this is everything wrong with college sports.

does anyone know why the B1G is so strong? what makes them all hold hands while we scramble every year? what is wrong with just "being"? what was wrong with the Big 12 before aTm left? everything was going just fine.

Pollard was searching and lobbying for landing spots at that time as well. Problem was that the Big 12 was in the process of negotiating new TV deals. So there really wasn't much of a financial framework to keep things together. But it sounds like we were going to go in a package deal with the Forgotten Five to the Big East Conference.

To be honest, the real plums in the Big 12 are Oklahoma and Texas. After that we are decent enough but not the types of schools that are looking to be poached.

I have been to Memphis when ISU played Tulsa. Fun town. Great food. Beale Street is awesome. The Liberty Bowl as a stadium is pretty good. FedEx Forum would be the top basketball venue in the conference in terms of quality/modernity (not "tradition" to keep the KU fans from head explosions). Memphis is also a top 50 media market that we could add to the conference

And Memphis at nearly 21k enrollment is right there with K-State and its 24k. Both totally pale in comparison to ISU's 35k but I digress

Out of all of the scenarios I've seen, adding the two AZ schools would be the cup of grass for me that would be a damn fine 12 team conference. I also wouldn't mind getting CU back and adding CSU on top of them.

Let's assume Cinci is in. So it comes down to 1 more school. UConn is a Carnegie I school. Has very good academics. Has over 31,000 students. Has a lot of TV sets. Has a big athletic budget. Has an elite basketball program. Their football is so-so. They have had an average football attendance as high as 38,000+ in 2010. But have had hard times with disappointing records and have been averaging about 30,000 or so recently, which is actually higher than Kansas. Coach Diaco is turning things around so attendance is improving at UConn.
