My take on the whole NSD is i absolutely love what the staff is doing and how they really attacked recruiting in such a short amount of time and really got the fans and players involved and seem to be recruiting nationally with heavy focus on midwest where they have ties; However in looking at who we are recruiting for offense im discouraged and for defense im excited. First, I'm not impressed or sold that Toledo's offense will work or produce more points than what we have been doing. Our defense was not the best last year and held then to 20 points in regulation after costly turnovers also by us. The other Power 5 team they played Arkansas also held them to 16 points. They seem to be trying to do the Jarvis west small slot guy in space that we tried and failed at already. We are not going to consistently have guys that can run away from the OU, Texas, TCU, Baylor type guys in space that has already been proven; Tavon Austin is like the only person i have seen be able to do that from a northen Big 12 School; However on the flip side Toledo's defense held us and Arkansas in check. Im excited that we will have an attacking defense that dictates to offenses instead of sitting back and giving teams everything SMH. My hope is offensively they will make changes and adjust to the league and the caliber of athlete in this league instead of taking the "it worked here at Toledo we are going to follow the process" because Im not impressed with the Toledo offense and how it projects to the big 12...its easy when in ur conference u have the best athletes to run that system, but im not sold on it PRAY im wrong or that they are not stubborn and able to say hey this not working lets adjust and do this.

On the topic of the offensive style, I think this coaching staff realizes they can't come out and run the same spread offense that most of the other Big 12 teams run. The opposing defenses practice against that stuff and have better overall athletes than ISU does. I'm not knocking the previous coaching staff, but they tried to keep up with the Joneses and play their style. Since that didn't work I'm in favor of trying something new, a system the current staff is familiar with and has experience running. We'll see how it works out.

I keep reading rumors about Jerrion Nelson and his academic issues, anyone know if there is a risk there?

As a very old hs coach and someone who watched tol very closely the last five years, this offense is your best hope for being competitive. This is a spread capable offense disguised as a power running offense. They have the ability to stretch the defense down field, dink around with short passes, and run it down your damn throat if you don't stack the box. This allows for a time eating offense that keeps these high octane offenses off the field. Less possessions. They can do this with multiple personnel packages or just line up with the heavy package and move them outside in a more spread look. All this benefits the defense as they get the time to rest and make adjustments. Also, defense not put in many short field situations that just kill a defense. Now the third leg. The special teams will be solid and help with field position and score those dreaded field goals that everyone hates, but scores points that get wins. What does this all mean. If ISU plans on breaking into the top four of this league, expect 21-17 wins where you are cussing the offense and Campbell for not taking more chances. By the way, I think tol did run it down Arkansas throat for awhile last year. If they can do it to them, I'm not convinced they can't do it to Big 12 teams.

IMO, this kid had the best looking highlight tape of any of our recruits. Also possibly the best offer list as well.

The fact we got him so late and was a signing day surprise makes me feel like he might have some academic issues and so other teams passed on him, but CMC figured he'd take a chance on him, but I"m totally guessing here and have no evidence to back that up.

Just seemed odd to me that we could land such a great recruit basically on signing day.

If he indeed makes it on campus, he might be the best recruit of this class IMO. Beast pass rusher.

For the last 4 years, Toledo has ranked 25th, 12th, 14th and 18th in Rushing Offense while at the same time, giving up the fewest sacks in all of FBS

You're discouraged that this staff brought in 7 OL guys? Our weakest offensive position group over the last decade? You think that means they are out of touch with what it takes to win in our league? Do you think ISU has worse skill position players that Toledo? Did you pay attention to Toledo the last few years? Pretty obvious you didn't or you'd see they were a very different style of offensive team last season than the previous one due to injury and were still able to put up good numbers (and WIN games), without having the best athletes in the MAC.

Allow me to go on a bit of a rant for just a moment....:realmad:

I've seen this before....trying to make the "What did/didn't work in G5 will/won't work here in P5"...and frankly it needs to stop. And this isn't directed at you personally great2baclone....I see/hear this all the time...in fact, many of these exact same comments were made when Pinkel left for Mizzou.

First of all, we have no idea what type of offense MC will deploy now that he has a new OC. If I were to guess I'd say something similar given who he targeted in recruiting and his comments (OLine/TE).

Secondly, it's not a big leap to suggest that regardless of the system, if you can put a MAC school in the Top 40-50 every year, you'll be able to have similar results with a bigger budget, better facilities and more athletic talent (with time). Is it guaranteed? Of course not; but I wouldn't bet against this staff....

Next...now I haven't seen every BIG 12 Game or studied every teams defensive efficiency, but I've seen enough to know that while there are some truly prolific offenses, I'd wager that you also have some HORRIFIC defenses....not unlike what I see out here in the PAC12.

And finally all coaches, regardless of sport work from a basic set of fundamental beliefs. The better coaches are open to adjusting those beliefs while the best (Popovich, Izzo, Belechik, Saban) actively evaluate and adjust those fundamentals based on situation and talent. Based on 4 years of observation, I suspect MC is somewhere in the middle...time will tell.

Takes his ACT Saturday.

Seems like Iowa Western thinks they will have him if he doesn't make it here. They tweeted about him joining them but took it down, I believe once it was found out he was still trying to qualify here.

What did Pinkel ever do? Name me one good coach who ever came out of the MAC, other than Woody Hayes, Bo Schembechler, Ara Parseghian, Urban Meyer, Glen Mason, and Ron Zook. :jimlad:
