I don't have a problem with us having to settle for our second or third choice. That happens everywhere. Even at top schools.

But I do not agree with Pollard pulling offers if candidates settle for ISU as their second or third choice (if that is indeed what happened in previous searches, and if that is what is happening here).

No kidding. It isn't all that embarrassing. It happened to South Carolina this week. It'll happen to other schools in the next few weeks.

A LOT of assumptions in this post

Of course there is. It's a fans message board. That's what we do.

If you want concrete information only, then you'll have to wait until the deal is signed and over with. The whole fun of these boards is trying to figure out what's going on before you really have any clue.

Really doesn't bother me all that much - I don't fault a hot coaching prospect for trying to make as much coin as possible in a wide open coaching market. If he was using us to force Missouri's hand? So be it. If he is using Missouri to up ISU's offer? So be it.

This is precisely why I said earlier in the thread that if you're truly interested in the guy, don't lowball him - offer him a legitimate Big 12 salary. $1.5 mil probably isn't going to get it done in this market unless we're not interested in much more than scraping the bottom of the barrel.
While I think 1.5 is on the low end it isn't lowballing. We can also offer something higher if he needs it.

Also using one offer to up another is fine, but it has to be done in a way that doesn't hurt feelings.

If it is going down the way it sounds it might be Campbell who is screwing the pooch. If Missouri goes a different way at least Campbell has the new Toledo contact to fall back on.

If it's Campbell trying to play us then it's time for JP to move on. He's not that good.

Pollard would screw up a one float parade.

Are people really saying time to move on because Campbell is playing us?

Heck, Campbell is not my first choice. But if ISU has decided that Campbell is the best man for the job, go outbid Missouri.

The butthurt because a human does what most humans do is hilarious. Why wouldn't he browse around and do what's best for him and his bank account?

And Campbell might not take the job offering the most money. $2.5 or $2.6 million isn't some huge deal. And it's a hell of a lot easier to win in the SEC east.

Just have to hope at this point that JP hasn't ruined our chances with some of the other candidates. Not sure how some might take it that they aren't the 1st choice.

How many times now has JP screwed up and not gotten his 1st choice in coaching searches? He needs to hire a "negotiator" to go into these interviews with him. He obviously is a lightweight and gets used and abused each and every time it seems.

I think I'd take a pass on Campbell too at this point. But it's going to be a big PR hit on JP once again in the media circles. Once again he thought he landed his #1 target, only to screw up the negotiations and let him off the hook. And whoever does take the job now knows he wasn't the one we really wanted. Just great.

Some of you want to blame Pollard for everything, but this is exactly the reason that I believe JP never liked using search firms in the past. Jamie could negotiate without giving the target's agent plausible deniability for leaked details. When a search firm is involved because Leath demanded it, now the other side can pull this leaked "48 hour" business trying to start a bidding war with interested parties.

I would think that Missouri could set their sights a bit higher than Toledo's head coach?

Missouri has been in the SEC Championship game a couple times in the last several years, correct?

Why would they be settling for a MAC guy?

At some point you just have to move on. The pool of choices shrinks every day as jobs get filled. Identify the guys you like, and be aggressive in getting them to Ames. If they don't want it--or they want to take days to look for other offers--they don't want it, and you have to continue looking.

This is Matt Campbell we are talking about here. He's a good coach, but not head and shoulders above everyone else, either. When it's time to move on you move on.

I am pretty sure JP will say whatever he has to say in order to save face. By my count, he has never admitted doing anything wrong or ever admitted even the slightest mistake. Anyone who claims JP did anything other than brilliance is explained away with a very condescending tone.

Pinkel came from Toledo.
