Agreed, if this story is leaked by Campbell's crew, there's no way it's 100% true. And Jamie is a smart dude. There's zero chance that he cancelled all our interviews without a deal in place.
I wouldn't be surprised if JP moves incredibly quickly on the backup plan and tries to lock it up in the next 24 hrs to try and save face a bit. The longer this drags out after things were reported nationally to be nearly finalized, the worse it will look to outsiders. I still think Campbell is in play, but his chances dropped by about 50%. Since JP had enough confidence in landing Campbell that he cancelled other interviews, it's hard to gauge if there is any trust left even if things don't progress with Mizzou.
If it is going down the way it sounds it might be Campbell who is screwing the pooch. If Missouri goes a different way at least Campbell has the new Toledo contact to fall back on.
If it's Campbell trying to play us then it's time for JP to move on. He's not that good.
i'd like to hear who has interviewed and who has had theirs cancelled, but people can't have feelings hurt probably (candidates).
Maybe because we've been through this before? Ever thought of that?
If this was Pollard's first coaching hire, none of us would have room to say anything, I agree. But it's not. He's screwed them up before. There is a history here. There is a reason why most were not comfortable with JP finding us our next coach.
I don't have a problem with us having to settle for our second or third choice. That happens everywhere. Even at top schools.
But I do not agree with Pollard pulling offers if candidates settle for ISU as their second or third choice (if that is indeed what happened in previous searches, and if that is what is happening here).
Really doesn't bother me all that much - I don't fault a hot coaching prospect for trying to make as much coin as possible in a wide open coaching market. If he was using us to force Missouri's hand? So be it. If he is using Missouri to up ISU's offer? So be it.
This is precisely why I said earlier in the thread that if you're truly interested in the guy, don't lowball him - offer him a legitimate Big 12 salary. $1.5 mil probably isn't going to get it done in this market unless we're not interested in much more than scraping the bottom of the barrel.
What's the backup plan, Jeremy? If you can't share a name, can you say if it is indeed one name that ISU agrees is #2 on their old list behind Campbell? Some reports indicated Campbell was clear #1 ahead of a crowded group and no clear #2.
Well Mizzou is interviewing another coach tomorrow too, and early was reported they were leaning towards promoting their DC. Can't blame them for doing the smart thing and doing their HW.
