D.M. flights now cheaper than Omaha on average

I really like the Des Moines airport - simple and convenient.

That said, I will drive the extra hour to get to MSP for a direct flight if DSM doesn't offer that.

It's nice because there's never anyone there, really easy to get around.

I used to use Omaha quite frequently to fly out west because it was nearly always a good $100 or more cheaper to do so. Yeah, the drive back always sucks, but it was better than paying through the nose to use DSM. In the last decade, I had found a couple round-trip fares to SFO or OAK for $140, which prompted spur of the moment weekend getaways. It's been quite a while since I've done that, though.

If you have time to plan, airlines usually drop and raise their fares periodically, and you can catch them when they're low if you're persistent about checking. I have found with Southwest that they sometimes drop fares by as much as 50% for just a few hours during a particular day before they jump back up again. I think I've only found it necessary to use something other than DSM once in the last three years or so to fly. It's certainly much more convenient.

With the passenger numbers seemingly always increasing through DSM, it would stand to reason that prices should remain at least competitive with OMA and MCI, if not be outright better every time for the foreseeable future.

I know, especially a 6:00 AM flight. You can park, check bags, get through security, and get to your gate in 20 minutes. It's awesome compared to the mess of bigger airports.

Yeah, it is all about passenger #'s. According to the article I linked to , 28% increase over recent years:

While the Des Moines International Airport has been growing, its regional counterparts have been losing travelers. Annual passenger counts at the Des Moines airport have increased nearly 28 percent since 2010, according to data from the airport. In the same time period, passenger counts have decreased 2 percent in Omaha and less than a percent in Kansas City

I've been flying to LA every week since Oct for work. Several people working with me are coming from Omaha. What info are you looking for? I can ask around for you.

At least until the new terminal is built in like 10 years, prices will climb when that monster is built. Though that will bring in more flights which in the long term means cheaper flights again ten years after that.

I don't think that is truly correct. The airlines set their prices based on supply and demand. They don't build and pay for airport facilities.

There is always a charge for it. It is just in the price of the ticket. United, american what have you, charge you for that carry on in your ticket price Frontier chooses to break it out. Neither is wrong and neither are right. Let the consumer choose which airline they like.

My HUUUUUGE complaint is people bringing on gigantic carry-ons that obviously don't fit, then when they fake like they are jamming them above (even thought they knew it was never going to fit) it slows down the whole process of boarding for everybody. They execute this pathetic selfish lie to save the $50 for checking a bag they know they have to check and can't fit on the plane.

About a month ago the person at the gate asked me to place my rather small duffel bag in the little box to prove it fits...I basically rejoiced and made a huge thankful scene. Placed it in there very easily and then asked her to please continue checking especially the idiots bringing in a full size suit case. No exaggeration, some lady next to me had a 3'x3' box on her lap the entire way from Chicago to DC last year...how does that even remotely count as carry on?

-end rant-

Just really general advice. Had been flying Chicago to LA for a few years a lot, but now we live in LA so I'm figuring out best deals to fly to Omaha (or maybe Des Moines to see other family) from LA. First attempt I just ended up using some FF miles from Delta, but I doubt Delta to Omaha is typically the cheapest, maybe it is.

But the airlines have to pay DSM Airport to use the facility, and that price will go WAY up unless the City decides to pay for the new terminal. I moved to the Tulsa area last year and they have a recently renovated and nice airport and prices are ridiculously high. Des Moines prices were much cheaper.

Dear god, this. There are a dozen rules that airlines have regarding items you can carry on board, and they enforce exactly none of them. Every flight I see at least a few people get on with 3 items - rolling suitcase, backpack, other bag - then watch them put all 3 items in the overhead bin. On my flight to LA Monday morning, they had to start checking all bags by the time they got 1/2 way through boarding group 3 because the overhead bins were already full. And several people boarded with very large carry-on suitcases or 3 bags. The most I saw the woman at the gate do was ask a few people "does that bag fit in the bin?" and when they obviously answered "yes" she let them board. Do you really think they will say "no" lady?

And the best was her making the announcement that people are allowed 2 carry-on items only, and if anyone had more than 2 they would have to consolidate. The guy standing right in front of her as she's making the announcement had 3 bags with him. She proceeds to hang up the mic, scan his boarding pass and doesn't blink at his 3 bags. Nice.

Just a FYI... If the 3rd bag is a medical device they have to let you carry it on also. Like a CPAP machine.

I would say if you're not tied to flying into/out of LAX to check out prices for other airports in the LA area. Several members of my team have been using ONT or BUR.

I just checked for a week trip in Jan through the system we use at work to book flights, and Delta was the cheapest option. Flights have really been creeping up in price over the last month or two. Looks like they are back down after the holidays, which is to be expected.

Yup, totally get that. On the other hand, that doesn't mean you get to put all three in the overhead bin.

Also, and I'm sure some will claim me to be sexist, but many times the offender is a woman - the large purse in addition to the suitcase and backpack/computer bag.

A few months ago, I saw a gentlemen bring a box fan as his carry on.

No frontier offered crap times. They have nice prices, but they charge for EVERYTHING. Seat selection, carry on bags ect.

I went with United.

Bump. Gunna fly to Denver late next month to stay with some family out there and catch a Nuggets-Warriors game. It looks like Frontier is the cheapest I can find for the date (November 20th or 21st) but I don't want to get nickel and dimed. I'll only need a backpack since it's just a half week trip so I think I'm good there.

Anyone fly Frontier? Advice on avoiding fees or the best way to book a flight? I'll only need a one way if that makes a difference.

Just an FYI: In my last three flights between Iowa and NC, two have been cheaper through Cedar Rapids than Des Moines. Worth taking a look.

Doesn't hurt to look, but I think you found a rare instance. I still see DSM and freaking Moline cheaper than CR. Especially going east.

Cheaper to check a bag than carry on with frontier. Become an early returns member online (free) coast 15 to check a bag. Think carry on is like 40. Also dates and times can be a factor. I had to go to msp to make a Friday wedding due to mine and my gf work schedule

Thanks for the info, do you not still get the one carry on for free (provided it fits under the seat in front of you, not an overhead one)?
