Good but not great performance against an overmatched Kansas team

I thought we should have scored two more touchdowns, given the way KU looked. I think our defense can help us early in games, but I don't see the running game continuing to be more effective because the competition will be much better.

I agree on the 2 more TDs sentiment. This could have really been a 45-6 Or 52-6 game. In the end the beat KU by a wider margin than most thought and gave them 7 on the pick 6.

Agreed, that performance gives us a loss against pretty much any other team in the conference. Throwing that pick 6 and that terrible screen pass. Allowing KU to go down the field on the first possession, our slow start followed by a missed FG. All of those things would have had a lot bigger impact vs a good team. When we can complete a pass over 15 yds (in the air) then we'll have hope. No way we can run this grind it out offense against teams who score 40+ every game and are capable of scoring 80!

Disagree with some of the sentiments. I saw an offense that sputtered at the beginning of the game. But we did play a lot better as the game went on. IMO Sam did not play well at the beginning. He did get better. IMO, the defense is getting better and better. We have some really good youngsters in Willie Harvey.......that guy is a playmaker. Brian Peavey......Northrup. And Cotton-Moya is great.

The Defensive Line is playing well. Love the 3-4. It works. Our future looks good on Defense.

On offense, I still see Sam struggling at times. I like the idea of Lanning getting some snaps. We did go downfield a few times. But I am not sure Sam has the arm strength to throw that ball more than about 25 yards or so with velocity.

We finally did get going and put away a team we should beat. Now we need to build on it and we could knock off Tech. We are getting them at a good time IMO.

This game came at the perfect time on the schedule. Hopefully the team can build on this win going forward

The pick 6 was 0% on Sam and 100% on Warren. Sam actually threw a good ball and would of it Warren on stride if Warren didnt quit.

So if SBR doesn't have the arm strength to throw it 25 yds, that is sad. We can't win consistently, especially in this league, with a QB who can't throw the deep ball. I sure would like to see Lanning throw one deep instead of just come in to hand it off or run the option. I'm not saying Lanning is the better QB. I'll leave that to the coaches. Just watch other games and realize how many times teams throw over the top vs us. It's something obviously lacking from our play calling.

When the defense comes out with fire (not like they came out yesterday) they are certainly a capable group that can do enough to win a lot of games. If the offensive line could somehow block just enough to get Warren 100 plus yards consistently and keep the defense off the field this team will be competitive in more games than we though. Unfortunately, I don't see the offensive line doing that. Warren would be great behind Loney's o-lines back in the day.

He has the arm strength for 25 yards. Much longer throws are not even attempted, so I am questioning whether he has the arm strength for the 40 yard pass down field. IMO, not a lot of college QB's have that type of arm strength.

I think, as CW also pointed out, the most disturbing thing about yesterday is how long it took us to get things going coming off of a bye week. How can we not be motivated coming out of the locker room to have a better start than that?

Midway through the 2nd quarter it was still 3-0 ISU. Had that been anyone not named Kansas, we would have been in a 14-3 type hole to start this game, and would have been fighting all day long to come back.

Maybe it was BECAUSE of the bye week that we came out flat and rusty, but you would think having the extra week to prepare we'd be just the opposite.

Midway through the 2nd quarter I said to the guy next to me in the stands that we're setting ourselves up for another close loss at the end. We allowed KU to drive the entire field to start the game, we then miss a chip shot FG ourselves, we settle for another FG later on instead of getting a TD, then we also punt on a 4th and 1 instead of going for it. It just had disaster written all over it, but luckily we got our act together and started playing like we should have from the beginning.

We made progress yesterday. The run defense was outstanding. I hope we are recruiting a placekicker this year. We added some new plays to the offense but need to work on the tunnel screen. Our red zone offense is horrid - if you look at how many times we've gotten 0 points. If we can't throw deep, can't roll out, and can't scramble, we are playing with one arm tied behind our back. Penalties are much improved. We are capable of beating Texas and KSU, and maybe a few others. Go State.

I think it was 50/50, even if Warren keeps running, the ball either still gets picked bc it would have been behind him or he gets drilled for a 5 yard gain bc the pass was going to be behind him. Sam never saw the defender involved in the play. The only place Warren was open was sitting down right where he was, Warren probably should have kept running but who would expect your QB to throw the ball directly towards the defender instead of away from the defense and toward your man. It's a ball that should have never been thrown, Warren would have been hung out to dry had he kept running. That's on the QB.

Here nor there
It was great to see ISU be the much better team and make some plays.

However KU deserves much of the credit. They are beyond bad. Depleted and much worse than last year, yet if we played them on the road in November after a season of losses the game likely is closer to last year. That easily could be the closet game KU has in conference and should have been much more of a blowout if not for CPR Ball.

Never actually saw Lanning play at Ankeny, but I heard from many that went that he really wasn't a great thrower. However, he might have improved and it's worth giving him a shot. Lanning should have checked in way earlier in the 4th Qrtr because the game was over by then. Even if he won't start this year, he needs to experience if he's going to start NEXT year.

Personally, if Mangino stays, I wouldn't be surprised to see Delira get some reps. He's Mangino's QB.
