Being in NY for 6 years I miss having a yard/distance between houses, friends and family, going to ISU games (so much so that I'm flying back specifically for the Uni game then flying back), casey's pizza, good meat from fareway, Ames restaraunts, nice people. My wife finds it creepy how nice I am to complete strangers.

Things I don't miss
Heat and humidity in summer
Bad seafood options
Flat land as far as the eye can see

Pork tenderloins, walking tacos, good sweet corn, people doing the one finger off the steering wheel wave, and snicker salad. I wasn't aware that snicker salad was an Iowa food until I moved away.

This is one of the things I hated most when we lived in DC area. You would meet friends at work, but to do anything with them, you would have to drive about an hour.

To be honest, I never got the 'nice people' generalization. Yes, people are nice, but they are nice everywhere. A lot of Iowans are cautious and not very open to new friendships. Some of our neighbors are skeptical of us, the 'new people'. We have been here nine years.

A few years ago, I was on my way back to Ames when my brake rotors went out. It was Sunday and I still had 2+ hours to Ames. I sat at a gas station for about 15 minutes until someone came up to me and offered to help out. We went back to his shop, he worked on my car while missing the Packers game, and told me the only thing I owed him was good grades and loud cheering at Hilton. I'm certain that this would never happen where I live now.

I miss:

B-Bops, Tasty Tacos, Mustards BBQ.
Nice people
Family (wife's family, but still)
Cyclone games
Cyclone gear

I'm only in Iowa City and I miss B-Bops here. I make it a point to stop by whenever I'm visiting my parents.

Been gone from Iowa for 29 years (Illinois then AZ) and I certainly miss ISU athletic events in person but mostly I miss the goodsense of Iowans in day to day conversations. Most Arizona people have been led to believe that the only reason they are not living in Mansions and have their own planes is because Jose & Pepe sneaked across the border 5 years ago to work in a car wash for $8/hour in 110 degree temps.

Are folks unable to make walking tacos outside of Iowa? Are Doritos an Iowa thing?

I'm in Cedar Falls and I really miss BBops and yes, Chipotle. No, I'm not a hipster
