Been gone nearly 25 years (Spokane over 20 years) and here's what I miss:

Thunderstorms.
Cicadias.
Fall colors.
ISU football in person.
Milly's tenderloins.
Mustards BBQ.
Tavern Pizza - the original.
Corso's pizza.
El Compadres.
Tasty Tacos.
Accurate weather forecasts.
Kitten noses and puppy dog kisses.

What else do the out-of-towners miss?

Pork tenderloins and thunderstorms

I miss the Midwestern work ethic. So many people down here think they work hard but it's just sad compared to people I worked with before
I miss fall colors. We get that for about 1 week at best.
I don't miss winter. **** snow. **** ice. And **** that cold air.

I don't know if this counts as "long gone", but i have lived in Colorado for 14 years now. I love the weather here and some of the activities available here. Denver, in particular, was never designed to accomodate the population explosion it has endured the last couple of years. I miss an easy commute (currently my commute is about 2 hours a day due to traffic). I miss trusting other drivers in the winter to understand or at least appreciate momentum, icy roads and anti-lock brakes don't make one immune to physics. I also miss ISU athletics.

To be honest, I never got the 'nice people' generalization. Yes, people are nice, but they are nice everywhere. A lot of Iowans are cautious and not very open to new friendships. Some of our neighbors are skeptical of us, the 'new people'. We have been here nine years.

Living in Grand Rapids, MI and Colorado for the last 7 years and what I miss about Iowa the most is the rows of corn fields as you drive through.

- All things ISU. Going to games especially.
- Friends and Family
- The Iowa Chop!
- Hickory Park

And while I live i a great beer city here in Grand Rapids, I wish I could have experience the beer growth in Iowa right now.

This. Especially the breakfast pizza.

When we were debating moving to Texas or not, we had a convo on what we would miss. Caseys was near the top, mainly for breakfast pizza.

I'd also miss hy-vee, I've been to grocery stores around the country, and high-5 is top notch

Yes, there are nice people every, there's just more of them in Iowa. And by nice, it's the little thing. People smiling and saying hello in the street. People stopping and helping someone broken down on the side of the road, that sort of thing. That is not the same anywhere else, and if you think it is, I'm very curious to know where you live.
