Rothstein can make a living if he alienates someone at Iowa State by breaking news and running with info. Harder for the local guys if they are told not to say anything to maintain trust in those relationships they need on a daily basis.

Exactly what I thought.

On Thursday (on KXNO) both Hines and Williams said they expected TJ to stay.

If you read between the lines, these guys usually know what's going to happen, they just don't come out and "report" it.

Totally makes sense; just seems weird to then have one of those local guys in CW calling out Rothstein for actually officially providing the information to the fans that the local guys either couldn't or didn't do yet. It seemed to me like he was saying "The local guys had this first because we hinted at it on KXNO for a week" while Rothstein actually reported it. Just a strange thing that probably plays into the media's fascination with being the one to break the story.

It's comical to watch some of the local guys get buddy-buddy with the MBB managers before games to try to get info.

How did everyone "know" Charlie Henry was going with FH to the Bulls. That's what I don't understand - it's like everyone knew that yet no one said why or how they knew it.

That's the same as me giving my opinion. Unless you have a source it's worthless. Seems like an easy way to say "we knew beforehand" if correct or "our source was wrong" if wrong. Take the credit and deflect the blame.

I want to know, if local sources are so important, how do the writers and radio hosts in, say, the Twin Cities get to come down hard on players yet still keep their sources?

For the record, I wasn't "calling anybody out." My apologies if it came off that way. Was simply stating that we (pretty much everyone who covers ISU locally) have been talking about this for days now. No drama. Expecting an official release Monday or Tuesday. Prohm having one-on-ones with local guys on Wednesday so that'd make sense.

There is a totally different power paradigm in a bigger market. Minneapolis is a pro sports town and they operate by those standards. Totally different than Ames/ISU.

Does Pollard strike you as the type of guy you want to get on the wrong side of if you're Chris or Hines?

This and the way I look at it (not speaking for anybody else who covers ISU), I have a lot more to lose by jumping the gun and being wrong than I do gain by being first.

That makes sense and it was unfair of me to characterize it that way, but for the record, I was glad to see Rothstein's tweet as I hadn't seen or heard any news about Otz at all. In fact Hines tweeted last week something along the lines of "I'll report it when I hear it because that's my job" when he got (for probably the 10,000th time) a question about it. So I'm sure the very well-connected local media knew about this well before Rothstein and had their reasons for not sharing it, but as a fan I am glad that he put it out there publicly.

Seems like local media are good at after the fact at implying they knew it all along.

I would rather that they get it right and tell it once then to be wrong and back track. There has been plenty of back tracking by posters on CF during this coaching transition, lots of people who were "in the know" who really weren't as well connected as they thought. I commend CW and the rest of the CF staff for getting things right, instead of just guessing.

You don't have good sources? I knew this last week. :)

I am not sure why national gets first but we are a bigger name now so more media digging around.

I was a little surprised that Rothstein reported the Prohm hire before the cyclone specific outlets. If anything, it seemed like The ISU AD was misleading the ISU outlets throughout the process.

That would be because Prohms camp leaked out to them, and none of the local people probably had connections inside the Prohm camp. ISU does a much better job of keeping the news hard to get.
