Way up there
If Otz is named our coach, then I'm 100% behind him. I just honestly don't think its the right hire. Especially since, as a head coach, he won't be beating down the recruiting trail like he was as an assistant. Basically his biggest strength won't be his primary duty. In the end though, I don't think we have many options. This feels like the safe move, not the best move.

Re: New Coach

It's fun and "NBA like." Players love it and it translates well to the next level. Also, like CyRann22 said "it gives ISU an identity that it desperately needs."

The play style alone has proven to attract recruits.

And that's the way the rules are trying to go anyways. I find games in the 70-90 pt range much more entertaining than those in the 50-69 pt range. But hey, I also like the NBA so what do I know.

So let's say Pollard asked Hornacek about the job and Hornacek said he was under contract to Phoenix. BUT it would take a minimum $3 million salary plus bonuses, plus a guaranteed contract and a low buyout for the NBA. Would you bite for that?

Not sure I would.

How did we get Johnny Orr from Michigan? As I recall, we offered him double what Michigan was paying him.

I'd go 2.5, bonuses at high benchmarks that could get it to 2.8 max, $800k NBA buy out and free dental

So you would be happy with Hornacek......who stays for a year.....recruits no one. And then leaves........while Niang, Long, McKay, and Monte Morris all leave as well. Would you be happy with that?

Yep. And it ended up,being the best bball hire in ISU history. As I'll continue to say that pollard will never get...at ISU u can't have a winning fball,or bball program consistently unless u pony up the big bucks and bring in a top coach. Obviously someone has sold JP and other ADs on the fact that the alternative is better. Don't get it. Never will

Added to this list is Larry Brown, I think he'd be a great hire.

Also what do those who had League Pass last year think of Hornacek?

Accept there is zero chance JP hires Hornacek without a massive NBA buyout. Pretty obvious. JP will require at least a 4-5 year commitment.

Johnny wanted a $5,000 raise from Michigan. They refused. Remember, that Johnny had a national runner-up finish in 1976. Iowa State inquired about hiring Bill Frieder. Johnny asked how much Iowa State was paying. Johnny ended up taking the job himself.

This said the salary ISU gave him was $45,000. He had made $33,655 at Michigan.

I don't know anything about the Suns management but if they are even a little bit like the Bulls, maybe Hornacek would like a chance to have a little more control and take a college job?

Throwing out a hypothetical of what could happen. You are offering an NBA coach. Who has just watched a guy jump from college to the NBA for enormous money. Take the loaded team that he leaves behind. And then jump back to the NBA for enormous money yourself. Definitely possible.

Would you be happy with that?

That's correct, but I think he had some other compensation that was not listed as salary. Over time the story tends to get exaggerated a bit. However, the point is that Lou McCollough was not afraid to throw the big bucks at Johnny. He also hired Earle Bruce, however he did let Johnny Majors get away.

People who think there needs to be at least mid major HC experience must have forgot McDermott, Bruce Weber, Lickleiter, etc. For every mid major coach that successfully made the jump there is one (or more)that failed.

WE could go out and land the next Fran McCaffrey, that would make a lot of people happy apparently.

We're about to get smoked/burned by one coach leaving to go to the NBA...and we want to entertain thoughts of having a current NBA guy who may or may not jump back to the NBA in the near future...I dunno...
