I have had Directv for a few years now and every spring when the weather gets hairy and the dish goes out I really wish I had a backup to watch the weather on TV. I have been thinking about getting one of those digital TV antennas. How would that work to have both of these together? Anyone done it? What was the setup like? Any recommended digital antennas for this kind of set up?

TIA

Winegard - you can find on Amazon. Hook up and it is just a different input on your TV.

Just plugs directly to your TV. Switch the input from your HDMI to the digital antenna.

I also use it for some sports events. The picture is usually better than satellite.

You can get an AM21 tuner ($60 on Amazon), which is a DirecTV OTA turner add-on device. Run your antenna into it and the AM21 connects to your DirecTV receiver. Allows you to run the OTA thru your guide and record to the DVR.

DirecTV introduced it when they dropped the OTA input on their receivers.

I have one, works great.

I only have directv go out 1 or 2 times a year, and it's absolutely dreadful when it does. Don't pay too much, they aren't worth it. TV stations also have something to do with the signal too. Forgot where I read it but ABC in DSM is such a weak signal or diff signal that it's near impossible to get it on antenna.

If your internet is not offline at the same time you can just stream ch8 and 13 on your laptop/ipad.

I do not have satellite or or cable television and have not had for five years now. I installed a large Winegard antenna in my attic and enjoy excellent television reception. Since you live in Lincoln, Nebraska, I recommend a Winegard HD7696P antenna with a HDP-269 preamplifier and point the antenna at about 37 degrees magnetic compass. Here is how to point TV antennas, http://www.kyes.com/antenna/pointing/pointing.html.

You are going to get a lot of advice from people that subscribe to cable or satellite and have no clue what they are talking about. If they have not installed their own over the air antenna and made it work well, they are well meaning but not helpful. Listening to them is akin to taking advice on how to have sex from the typical 11 year old boy.

Hey troll boi - you should check yourself before you wreck yourself. Have an antenna installed in my attic and I am sure I know what I'm talking about.

Now go back to goemaw or wherever your favorite KSU cesspool is.

Any help on why I can't receive the UHF channels, but receive all the Hi-V here in Houston? I did a channel scan but only got the Hi-V

This guy has it right.

You could plug directly into your TV but with the AM21 your OTA locals will show up in your guide, you can view them from any TV in your house and record to your DVR just like your satellite channels.

In CR our ABC affiliate is in a dispute with DTV and is not being carried. I already had an antenna and AM21 tuner and I just laugh while everyone complains they can't watch their ABC shows. If they only knew how easy it was.

Another benefit, if you set your DVR to record OTA channels instead of satellite it opens up two more tuners on your Genie for recording satellite programming. You could theoretically watch or record 7 channels at once (5 sat and 2 OTA).

I wish you could plug it straight into your box like with Dish but the AM21 is a relatively inexpensive work-around.

I have the am21 and it works great, but, it doesn't magically add tuners.
