Yes. I think Leath wants to distance himself from the "all is well, buckle up your seatbelts" crap that he has had to listen to JP and CPR say during the Tailgate Tour stops the last two years. Our president is saying to fans, "I know you're not stupid - the current product is crap." It's refreshing, and to me, serves as a jump-start to a more urgent off-season for the football program.

Yeah like Everyone inside ISU doesn't already know this including CPR. How does Leath's PUBLIC comments help Recruiting now? Bottom line is I want as much talent infusion as possible NOW and Leaths BIG mouth just blocked that.

going 3-9 and 2-10 and being one of the worst teams of the country probably blocked that more. Also having no offense or defensive identity.

Don't agree with this move. You publicly back the staff right up to the press conference where you announce the firing.

Leath is a leader. Leaders make the tough decisions. Some people don't like that.

Why does he need to make a statement at all? It's not "damned if you do, damned if you don't", like some other poster suggested. Seems to me like he just wanted to throw his two cents into the pile to remind people he still works here.

Rhodes is how everyone spells his name now, but how can't this article get it right?

His comments aren't going to ruin the team next year. If we are relying on recruits that aren't here yet for next year we've already lost. If CPR fails he's gone anyways. No harm done. All it does is make CPR know he has to get better, and if his players want to keep him it makes them know they have to step up.

might be afraid Pollard won't have the balls to make a move next year if PR wins 2-3 games again. Pretty strong statement against both of them, not just the coach.

Not even close to a Leath fan, but there's still a reason he made these comments. If Pollard gets too attached to his hires he might be walking too.

Sometimes things need to be said publicly, and they need to be said by the person at the top. Leath's concerns are keeping the big donors on board and keeping ISU in a Power 5 conference, not football recruiting. Rhoads has had plenty of time to get his recruiting in order. Usually, when the President of an organization has to get involved, it's because the "customers" aren't happy with the answers they are getting from the lower management. Think about it...

Why should this matter at all from a presidents standpoint? I'd rather he make on a statement on the stupidly over-crowded dorms, or how its nearly impossible to eat on campus from 12-1 than whether he approves of the football coach or not.

If we lose to UNI, Rhoads is gone and Pollard or Leath will follow.

Not to the Detriment of your own organization. He can still fire CPR in a year whether he makes the statement or not. I stand by my statement that it set ISU back for next year and maybe longer.

CPR already set the program back for next year and maybe longer.

I personally think you are giving Leath too much credit. If he seriously had big intentions with public comments, he wouldn't have only made them on some obscure radio show. I don't think that was him "getting involved".

For what it's worth, the comment about a turn around being expected next year was not a quote in the article. I think that was editorializing based on what was quoted which made the comments seem more significant than they actually were.

At least with a two win season the staff can sell playing time. MM has never had a chance to recruit a class to ISU, or Blaney or Ayeni. They are trying to form that identity. This handcuffs them. I have been one of the most vocal about Defensive recruiting on this board but Leaths comments don't help them either.

After Leaths comments now the coaches have to answer a lot more questions to recruits about the long term that they shouldn't have to answer if Leath shuts his trap. His comments directly undermine what JP said two weeks ago and sends a mixed message.
Great Leaders let their top managers do their jobs and give guidance behind closed doors, not undermine them publicy to put themselves in the spotlight. The notion of JP being too cozy with CPR is also a bogus reason to make his remarks publicly because Leath has the power to fire them both this time next year if he so chooses so why go public with it? That doesn't add up.

I would say this if I was a supporter of the staff or if I wasnt. I am a supporter of ISU. The timing and depth of his comments were not well thought out, and I now question Leaths Leadership ability much more than CPR and JP's. That scares me as an Alum when the Captain has poor judgement.

Disagree. We need JUCO talent based on needs and this is the prime time to sign them.

That may be true but why broadcast it outside of the state for everyone to see?
What can be worse nationally than being in ESPNs bottom 10 and the country knows about the FCS losses they brought up on about every telecast.
